Grantchester star Tom Brittney is leaving the ITV drama series as Reverend Will Davenport at the end of season nine, but why? Season eight of Grantchester returns tonight (Thursday, 11 January) as we welcome back the Cambridgeshire village and its crimes taking place during the 90s. One star of the show is Tom, 33, who took over the lead role of Reverend Will Davenport from James Norton back in 2019. He's become a fan favourite of the show solving crimes and keeping the village in order, but it was confirmed last year that Tom will hang up his vicar's cloak at the end of season nine.
While we've still got some time before we say a fond farewell to the star, here's everything we know about his departure and why he's decided to leave. A statement confirming his exit was released in July last year as the actor said it was "time" to pass the role onto someone else. He said: "I've had the most incredible time playing Will Davenport for the last five years.
"I got to solve crimes with my best friend, and work with the best cast and crew I could ever ask for. I'll miss it more than anything. But it's time for the baton to be passed, as it once was to me, and I'm so excited for Rishi to join the Grantchester family." According to the Radio Times part of Tom's reason to leave the ITV show is to focus on new projects.
It's been known that the actor has been actively involved in other projects and it looks as though his main focus is in film. Tom bagged a role in the upcoming action comedy film, Back in Action, alongside Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz. Directed by Seth Gordon, filming began in March last year and wrapped in late April, but a release date is yet to be announced.
