The answer is actually much sweeter than you think. “I've got my best friend here with me, who is also my agent,” Butler responded when asked about his plus-one. “And I owe my career to him, so as a thank you, I wanted him to be by my side tonight.” Oscar nominees have been known to bring their parents, children, or other important relatives to the ceremony as their dates. (Here's from this year alone.) Even so, I can't say I've seen many actors shout out their agents—which is a shame, when you think about it. Back in February, Butler told Access Hollywood about his plans to bring his agent and friend James Farrell to the Oscars.
