Matt Donnelly Senior Film Writer Pearls were clutched all over Hollywood on Monday in the wake of an unlikely press beef – United Talent Agency CEO Jeremy Zimmer and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex. On a media spree at the Cannes Lions for the past week, Zimmer was asked about the recent meltdown of a $20 million multi-year deal Meghan and husband Prince Harry signed with Spotify in 2020. The pact produced a single series, “Archetypes,” which was not renewed. The termination of the deal was announced June 15. “Turns out Meghan Markle was not a great audio talent, or necessarily any kind of talent,” Zimmer told Semafor at the marketing festival in the South of France. “And, you know, just because you’re famous doesn’t make you great at something.”

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic Singer-songwriter Brandy Clark has enjoyed triumphs recently on two fronts. Ten years of work on the score for her first Broadway musical, “Shucked,” paid off with a Tony nomination and a Drama Desk Award win for her and score co-writer Shane McAnally. And the Nashville resident’s self-titled fourth album, which found her friend Brandi Carlile moving into the producer’s chair, got the kind of great reviews that augur for more Grammy nominations (on top of the 10 nods she’s already picked up over the years). While she was making one of her many visits to New York, Variety caught up with her for a Facetime feature to discuss both her new Warner Records album, one of the year’s best, and the hit musical, which has a cast album of its own. The joint timing is coincidental, of course (“Shucked” was originally tagged for a 2020 opening, with an out-of-town run in D.C. that was just about to begin when the pandemic kicked in). That she gets to talk about two home runs at once makes her career seem far from anything that ends in “-ucked,” unless lucked applies.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex (Prince Harry and Meghan Markle) have had some major headlines written about them over the past few months.
Meghan Markle has been accused of faking interviews for her Archetypes podcast which was axed from Spotify after just one season. The podcast ran for 12 episodes from August 2022, and it saw Meghan chatting to celebrities, historians and experts about the history of stereotypes levelled against women. The podcast-focused outlet Podnews reported that multiple sources said that Meghan had various staff members conduct interviews with the guests, and then the royal's own voice would be edited into it. Without referencing specific episodes or sections of the Archetypes podcast, the outlet reported that: “some interviews on the show were done by other staffers, with [audio of 41-year-old Meghan's] questions edited-in afterwards”.
