Psychopath Donald Neilson became feared in the north of England for his ruthless and violent methods, which saw four people die by his hands.
Born in Bradford, Yorkshire, before he was given the nickname the 'The Black Panther', his criminal career began as a house burglar. Having left the army in 1958, after service in Aden, Cyprus and Kenya, he had married and settled down in Bradford with his wife Irene, and together they had a daughter, Kathryn.
Following his time in the army, Neilson struggled to provide for his family, working first as a carpenter and builder before later failing to make a success of a taxi firm. It's thought his career as a house burglar started in 1965.
To avoid capture, the ex-soldier used jungle survival tactics learned during his National Service. Every few weeks, he would change up his pattern of behaviour just to throw the police off his scent.
Dissatisfied with the slim pickings from his burglaries, Neilson upped the stakes and violence of his crimes after stealing guns and ammunition from a house in Cheshire. Between 1971 and 1974, he took to robbing small post offices, 18 such crimes which became progressively violent as people tried to defend their livelihoods and property.
