New Release Wall“Elvis” (Warner Bros. Home Entertainment): Baz Luhrmann’s obsessions are piled on top of other obsessions that are themselves mashed up with ongoing tendencies toward spectacle, extravagance and emotional extremes — that whole “Moulin Rouge!” ethos of Truth Beauty Freedom Love — and this big loud biopic/love letter to Elvis Presley is a visual and sonic blast, with an uncanny Austin Butler as the King (and a quite odd Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker, but that’s also part of the fun).
You don’t even have to like the late legend’s music to enjoy this juggernaut of sensation, just find a friend with a giant-screen TV (this one’s already available in 4K) and very loud sound. Also available:“Batman: The Long Halloween” (Deluxe Edition) (Warner Bros. Home Entertainment): The Caped Crusader has to hunt down a killer that strikes on various holidays in this two-part animated feature.“The Black Phone” (Universal): A resourceful boy (with assistance from his visions-having little sister) has to escape a child-killer’s basement.
That child-killer is played by a terrifying Ethan Hawke, so hang on.“Jurassic World: Dominion” (Universal Pictures Home Entertainment): We just live with the dinosaurs now, and they take a long time in line at Starbucks.“Lightyear” (Disney/Pixar): In case you were still unaware, it’s not a film about the Buzz Lightyear action figure from the “Toy Story” movies. It’s a representation of the movie young Andy saw about an astronaut named Buzz Lightyear that in turn spawned the Buzz Lightyear action figure from the “Toy Story” movies.
Got it?“Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” (Universal Pictures Home Entertainment): Lesley Manville stars as a widowed house cleaner in 1950s London who dreams of a

Antonio Ferme editor Long before “Marriage Story” writer-director Noah Baumbach was attached to Netflix’s “White Noise,” several filmmakers mounted attempts to adapt the notoriously “unfilmable” novel of the same name written by Don DeLillo. Variety reported in 2004 that “The Addams Family” director Barry Sonnenfeld was on board to direct the film, known as his “longtime passion project.” The torch was then handed off to Michael Almereyda, best known for his 2000 film “Hamlet” starring Ethan Hawke, after Uri Singer acquired the rights to DeLillo’s novel. Baumbach’s “White Noise” served as the opening night screening for the 60th annual New York Film Festival on Friday, making its North American debut after a divisive premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The director told Variety on the red carpet that he didn’t give a second thought to the idea that his film’s source material was unadaptable.
BFI’s “Baz Luhrmann in conversation” event in London.“There are two great American gestures, I think. The two that really fascinate me are the ‘big sell’ – the ability to sell well, and the other is the gesture of the new,” Luhrmann explained.
Well, he didn’t rule it out.
Antonio Ferme editor George and Amal Clooney spotlighted justice defenders on Thursday night at the inaugural Albie Awards in New York City. “Growing up, my whole life, it just felt like oftentimes governments fail us,” George told reporters outside of the New York Public Library. “We need to, all of us, be diligent and fight for it — and that’s why we’re here tonight — because we have people who are risking their lives to do it, and risking their freedom willingly, which a lot of people aren’t.” The married couple formed the Albie Awards to honor individuals who, at great personal risk, have devoted their lives to justice. Many celebrity guests walked the red carpet including Oscar Isaac, Dua Lipa, John Oliver, Julia Roberts, Drew Barrymore, Ethan Hawke and Meryl Streep.

Naman Ramachandran Universal’s ‘Ticket to Paradise,’ starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney, and Warner Bros.’ “Don’t Worry Darling,” with Florence Pugh, Harry Styles and Chris Pine, were in a close tussle at the U.K. and Ireland box office, with the former winning narrowly. “Ticket to Paradise” collected £2.8 million ($3.03 million) to top the box office, edging “Don’t Worry Darling,” which took £2.7 million ($2.99 million) to second place, according to numbers released by Comscore. Disney’s “Avatar” rerelease placed third with £1.2 million. After two weeks atop the box office, Disney’s “See How They Run” dropped to fourth position in its third weekend with £473,222 for a total of £3.6 million.
Emily Longeretta Week two of “Dancing With the Stars” was all about Elvis Presley. The 15 pairs each performed to a different song from the King of Rock and Roll on Monday night, with hopes of earning better scores than the premiere week. Some of the dancers were masked, as four crew members and pro dancer Danella Karagach tested positive for Covid-19 following the first episode.
Jon Burlingame editor Does Doja Cat’s hit song “Vegas” qualify to be an Oscar Best Song nominee? The short answer is: Maybe. But the tune from Baz Luhrmann’s biopic “Elvis” faces more challenges than the average new movie song. The three-and-a-half-minute, commercially released version of “Vegas,” a portion of which is heard during the first half-hour of the film, interpolates the 1950s classic “Hound Dog,” although more in its repeated use of a famous lyrical phrase (“you ain’t nothin’ but a…”) than any musical element. Because of that, original “Hound Dog” songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller are co-credited as writers on “Vegas” along with Doja Cat (under her real name, Amala Zandile Dlamini), David Sprecher and Roget Lufti Chahayed, the latter two of whom are the credited producers.
