West Lothian animal lovers are devastated after a much-loved swan died after being attacked by a heartless thug.
The Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) were called to attend Dedridge Park pond after a report was made to them stating a member of the public had attacked a swan on Saturday. September 23.
When they arrived the swan had unfortunately died from its injuries with the charity vowing to conduct an investigation alongside police.
Elayne Young, a constant visitor to the local park where the swan was found dead, says that the entire community is heartbroken by such a cruel act and that they are looking to introduce community patrols.
“The death of the swan has outraged the whole community, people are close to the swans in Dedridge and lots of folk feed them and share photos on Facebook,” she said.
“The bins around the area even feature swans as a logo. The whole community is both angry and upset as these actions are beyond comprehension to most decent people, obviously we want something tangible done and an idea is being floated around people patrolling the pond on a voluntary basis.

“Obviously this matter is in the police hands now and hopefully the perpetrator receives punishment fitting to the potential crime.
“The swans and the cygnets are a joy to many and the community have watched their progress over time, sharing stories and photos and now there is a sense of loss and indeed anger at this incident.
