A drug which suppresses appetite will soon be available through the NHS.
Semaglutide, also known as Wegovy, has been hailed a “game changer” and is reportedly popular with celebrities in the USA. The drug, manufactured by Danish firm Novo Nordisk, is an appetite suppressant which is delivered via a weekly injection.
Patients inject themselves weekly with the drug, which mimics the hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that is released after eating. This makes people feel full, meaning they eat less and lose weight.

A previous study found that people who are given the drug saw their weight drop by 12 per cent on average after 68 weeks. Nausea and diarrhoea were the most common side effects of Semaglutide, but these were “typically transient and mild-to-moderate in severity and subsided with time, a study in the New England Journal of Medicine found.
So when exactly will the drug be available on the NHS, who will be eligible for it and what have the experts said?
Thousands of people will be eligible when the drug becomes available on the NHS.
Guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) says the drug will only be offered on the NHS to adults with at least one weight-related condition and a body mass index (BMI) score of at least 35. The weight-related conditions that make obese people eligible include type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, high blood pressure, dyslipidaemia (unbalanced or unhealthy cholesterol levels), obstructive sleep apnoea and heart disease.
In some cases, people with a BMI of 30 and over may be able to access the drug. People will only be given Wegovy on prescription as part of a specialist

premiered on Apple TV+ and would forever change life as he knew it. The British actor, comedian, and writer was already carving out a name for himself in the business—but playing Roy Kent, an aging all-star soccer player with a penchant for foul language and a heart of gold, has earned him multiple Emmys, a global following, and coveted (by my standards, at least) appearances on Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock.
