The parents of a teenager who died in a tragic canoe incident in Bolton have said they will "never come to terms with what has happened" following the death of their "beautiful and gentle" son.
Joseph Holt, 17, died after falling into the River Croal, off Raikes Lane in Bolton, while canoeing on the evening of April 9. Emergency services attended the scene, but Joseph, fondly known as Joe to his family and friends, later died in hospital after being pulled from the water.
The local teenager from Little Lever was laid to rest at St Matthew’s Church on April 26. Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, his parents Suzanna and Andy said the Bolton College student, who "had his whole life ahead of him" gave them "purpose and meaning".

"Joe always was a beautiful, funny boy, smiling, happy, quiet and gentle," they said in a tribute. "He loved his dogs, spending time with his friends, playing on his Xbox, getting his favourite takeaways or going shopping for his clothes and trainers.
"He was 17-years-old and had his life ahead of him; we will never come to terms with what has happened or the fact that our beautiful Joe has lost his future life and happiness. He filled our whole world, all our thoughts, hopes, dreams and plans now and for the future.
"Our loss is impossible to bare but what is hardest of all is Joe's suffering and loss. Joe was our life, he gave us purpose and meaning, peace and strength, hope, and a joy and happiness we couldn't imagine. Joe how we loved you, we were always so proud of you and always felt so blessed."
