Friends of a tragic university student have spoken of the devastating moment they messaged him hoping to meet up over the summer break, not knowing he had been killed.
Liam O’Connor was struck by a silver Peugeot 308 on Great North Road in Jesmond, Newcastle, just after 1.40am on June 10. The 20-year-old pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries after colliding with the vehicle, which was reportedly travelling northbound.
He was rushed to hospital where he died. The friends of the Newcastle University student, originally from Manchester, described him as a 'special' person who was 'funny' and 'hardworking'.

Liam was studying for a degree in mathematics with Finance at Newcastle University after attending Saint Ambrose College in Altrincham. He had just finished the second year of his course and was living in Jesmond, a neighbourhood just outside Newcastle city centre popular with students, reports the Chronicle.
He had been accepted onto the international year abroad programme and was getting ready to spend a year studying in San Jose in California. Liam's became friends with Freddie Howard, 20, from Portsmouth, and Jenson Yorke-Hadley, 21, from York, while living in student halls.
The trio were all in their first year at Newcastle University.
Freddie, who studies accounting and finance, said: "We got on with Liam so much. He was very funny, he had a quite dry sense of humour. He was quite easy to get along with, he was more interested in asking about everyone else than himself.
"He would go to the rugby a lot.
