Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic A short film that actor-turned-director Kristen Stewart made with the group Boygenius got an official Hollywood sendoff Thursday night at the El Rey Theatre, with a film premiere that also doubled as a launch party for the indie-rock trio’s new album, “The Record.” Stewart did not participate in the Q&A that Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus did with members of the press and public after the screening, but she stepped out to introduce the short film, which is essentially an interlocking combination of music videos for three songs from the new album: “$20,” “Emily I’m Sorry” and “True Blue.” The imagery is sometimes sentimental, sometimes bracing and vivid. Bridgers sings “Emily I’m Sorry” in front of a monster truck rally. Palms are cut for a blood oath. And there is some lip-locking through copious blue paint. The framing device is sweet, though, beginning with one band member sleeping fitfully in bed and waking up at the end embraced in a group cuddle.

It comes after Stewart was touted to direct three of the band’s music videos.Containing Boygenius’ first three singles from their LP (‘$20’, ‘Emily I’m Sorry’ and ‘True Blue’), the visuals begin with Dacus humming along to ‘The Record’ opener ‘Without You Without Them’ before Baker wakes up in a red race car bed.Later, Bridgers takes the lead for the ‘Emily I’m Sorry’ part as she sings in a stadium while monster trucks drive around her.

“Elemental,” the new Pixar feature from Peter Sohn (who partially inspired the character of Russell in “Up”), and features Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner) get ready for his first date since Ellie passed away. It is deeply touching and hilarious and appropriate as a preamble for “Elemental,” which focuses on the love story between two very opposite characters – one made of fire (Ember, played by Leah Lewis) and the other made of water (Wade, played by Mamoudou Athie).“Carl’s Date” was written and directed by Pixar stalwart Bob Peterson, who co-wrote and co-directed “Up” and who wrote and directed the rest of the “Dug Days” shorts, returned for “Carl’s Date,” along with producer Kim Collins, who produced “Dug Days” as well.At a presentation of the short at Pixar, Peterson said that he thought that “Carl’s Date” was the “bow” on top of the “Up” story and that it would likely be the last material from the world (at least for now).

This is a weird thing to say, considering the studio’s long history of success, but Pixar needs a hit. After the lukewarm (putting it nicely) reception to last year’s “Lightyear,” combined with a pandemic that saw three films get straight to streaming (“Soul,” “Luca,” and “Turning Red”) and one film with an incredibly short theatrical run (“Onward”), it feels like forever since 2019’s “Toy Story 4.” Obviously, Pixar is hoping to buck that trend with the upcoming film, “Elemental.” READ MORE: Pixar Exec Says ‘Lightyear’ Failed Because “We Asked Too Much Of The Audience” As seen in the new trailer for “Elemental,” the film follows the story of a world where the five elements are all personified and live separately.

The film, titled Това, Kоето Oстава (English title: What Stays After), is directed by Dimitris Georgiev. On Nowruz, which means “New Day,” Iranian activist Naza Alakija is paying tribute to Iran’s “Woman. Life. Freedom.” movement with the release of a powerful short film titled “Rise” about a young woman who, like Amini, pushes back agains Iran’s morality police and is kidnapped from the streets of Tehran. Alakija, who is the founder and CEO of London-based Evoca Foundation, produced the short – which features British-Iranian actress Yasaman Mohsani (“Secret Invasion”) as the victim – with partners who have chosen to remain anonymous for fear of retribution from Iran’s security forces, as has the film’s female director.
