exceptions like “Ellen,” the talk shows that continued airing new episodes avoided crossing picket lines by not using scripts of any kind. So long as there was no content created by a writer, the show could honor the strike and still make new episodes. This resulted in a lot of improvisation — riffing, really — by these shows’ hosts and performers.
But the need to fill airtime with something is a huge challenge, especially when a show lasts for an hour. Enter O’Brien, who became known for particularly creative means of entertaining his audience. And in the clip above, resurfaced on Tuesday by NBC reporter Ben Collins, you can see an inspired example of that.
O’Brien manages to fill airtime by attempting to spin his wedding ring around for 47 seconds. “If we do it this will be television history,” O’Brien quips.Alas, O’Brien was only able to get it to spin for 36 seconds despite a heroic effort.
When his failure was confirmed, a member of his band played a shrill noise on a muted trumpet, prompting this memorable comment on the situation:“It’s hard enough without writers to lose a ring spin, but then to have a horse laugh at me… ultimate indignity,” O’Brien joked.Watch the clip above now. This is true. Here's Conan spinning his wedding ring during the 2007 writers' strike just to fill airtime.
It was like this for months.NBC was lucky that Conan is the GOAT, but it's impossible to explain to Gen Z how bad the content will get if there's another one. https://t.co/tNkduyiNac pic.twitter.com/5Eo1WqQG0l

Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent Revered Italian auteur Marco Bellocchio is returning to Cannes with “Kidnapped,” a drama that reconstructs the true tale of Edgardo Mortara, a young Jewish boy who was kidnapped and forcibly raised as a Christian in 19th century Italy. It’s a story that Steven Spielberg had his eye on, having announced in 2016 that he would make a drama about Mortara for which he began scouting locations in Italy. Last year, Bellocchio was in Cannes with another kidnapping drama, the limited TV series “Exterior Night,” about the abduction and assassination of former Italian premier Aldo Moro by Red Brigades terrorists. The veteran auteur’s first foray in TV has had the rare distinction of playing well in Italian cinemas — in two installments — before airing on RAI and selling globally. Earlier this month it also scored a slew of statuettes, including best director, at Italy’s David Awards, the country’s top film prizes.
Henry Winkler is reflecting on the 17 seconds it took for him to crash his character's iconic motorcycle on the set of "Happy Days." Known for his breakout role as Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli in 1974, Winkler candidly detailed the crash, revealing that someone had to leap out of his way. "I rode it really for 17 seconds, in the beginning, going up the hill. That was it," the actor said during an appearance on "The Jennifer Hudson Show." "And there was a moment . .
They say you always remember the first time, but Molly Manning Walker’s Cannes debut, in the shorts section of Directors’ Fortnight, only happened in theory, after the pandemic closed down the festival. “It’s weird but I’ve never seen a film I’ve made in a cinema,” she says. “Both of my other shorts came out in the pandemic, then Good Thanks, You? premiered at Cannes, but only virtually, which was heartbreaking. So, it will be great to be at Cannes and experience it in full force.”

thriller night with Michael Jackson sometime in the early 1980s.“I saw Michael Jackson naked,” the “Grace and Frankie” star shared Monday on “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen.”Fonda played “Plead the Fifth” on the Bravo show while promoting her new film, “Book Club: The Next Chapter.” During the segment, Cohen, 54, asks his guest three questions — and they can only plead the fifth once. After Cohen asked Fonda to name “one man in Hollywood that tried to pick you up once that you turned down,” she revealed she went skinny-dipping with Jackson, who died in 2009 at the age of 50.“Okay, I’m listening,” Cohen said as his jaw fell open. “Where’d you see him naked?”The two-time Academy Award winner said Jackson came to visit her on “a beautiful moonlit night” at her little cottage on the lake while she shot 1981’s “On Golden Pond.”“And you said, ‘Let’s skinny dip,'” Cohen guessed.“No, he did!” Fonda replied.“I think because he knew he was going to die young and I would talk about him, being naked,” she explained as the studio audience laughed.

coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's memory were felt throughout, with several nods made to both late royals. When it came to Elizabeth, who died in September, there were several nods made by her son and his second wife, largely in the outfits they wore during Saturday's ceremony at Westminster Abbey in London, England. When it came to the king, his Stole Royal was inspired by one worn by his mother during her coronation in 1953 and featured a series of roundels that included the four emblems of the United Kingdom. Camilla's outfit featured several more notable nods to Elizabeth, with the new queen wearing her late mother-in-law's historic «coronation necklace.» First commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1853, it was also worn by Elizabeth during her crowning ceremony in 1953. Additionally, Camilla's «Robe of State,» which was worn upon her arrival at Westminster Abbey, was originally made for Elizabeth in 1953. Her «Robe of Estate,» meanwhile, was embroidered with 24 plants, including the Lily of the Valley, which was the late queen's favorite flower. During the ceremony, Camilla was crowned with Queen Mary's Crown, which was made for the 1911 coronation of Queen Mary, the consort of King George V.
writer’s strike, the only network-based late-night show to stay on the air – and its viewers shouldn’t notice any difference. That’s because “Gutfeld!” writers are non-guild, according to the network, and are not participating in Hollywood’s first labor stoppage in 15 years. The late-night broadcast writers for Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers are all members of the Writer’s Guild of America, and all went dark on Tuesday.Other shows, like “The View,” are forging ahead without their guild writers.
