People who are using an electric blanket to keep warm this winter are being urged to carry out important safety checks following a recent spike in fires.
According to the charity Electrical Safety First, electric blanket fires increased by 38 per cent in 2023 compared to the previous year. The latest government figures showed there were 29 incidents in England last year, compared with 21 the previous year, with one in three of these involving either a fatality or casualty.
The majority of electric blanket fires - more than 80 per cent - were linked to faults, according to the analysis. The charity has now issue a warning after raising concerns that older blankets could be going unchecked after years of use.

Electrical Safety First said it was concerned that ongoing high energy bills and freezing temperatures were creating the “perfect storm” for heating appliance fires as households grappled with staying warm.
When blankets are stored for long periods of time the wires inside them can become damaged, which can lead to overheating. The charity said blankets should be regularly checked for any signs of wear, and blankets that are very old and have had a lot of use should be replaced.
Luke Osborne, deputy technical director at Electrical Safety First, said: "Your electric blankets can become damaged over time when folded and stored. Wires inside the device are prone to fraying or breaking after years of being folded and stored away which can risk the build-up of heat."
