Cases of tuberculosis (TB) have risen above pre-Coronavirus cases with health authorities stressing that 'collective action' needs to be taken. TB is a bacterial infection that affects the lungs and throat and can become serious if left untreated.
New data published on Thursday (February 15) shows cases increased by 10.7 per cent in 2023 from the previous year as more than 4,500 people were diagnosed with it last year. While England remains a low incidence country for TB, the current trajectory takes the UK further from the pathway to meet World Health Organization (WHO) 2035 elimination targets
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), which published the statistics in its annual TB report, has now highlighted the main symptoms of TB - which includes a persistent cough.

The largest rises in cases have been in the urban centres of London, the North West of England and West Midlands. However, there have also been increases in the South West of England and North East of England too.
Dr Esther Robinson, Head of the TB Unit at UKHSA, said: "We need collective action to tackle TB and we are working with partners across the health system to understand how we can best refocus efforts to stamp out this preventable and treatable infection. Not every persistent cough, along with a fever, is caused by flu or COVID-19. A cough that usually has mucus and lasts longer than three weeks can be caused by a range of other issues, including TB. Please speak to your GP if you think you could be at risk."

“Mary Poppins” movie due to “discriminatory language.”The Disney movie, which came out in 1964, stars Julie Andrews as magical governess Mary Poppins and Dick Van Dyke as her chimney-sweep sidekick, Bert.It snared 13 Oscar nominations — including one for Best Picture — and won five Academy Awards, including one for Andrews as Best Actress. It is being re-released in some movie theaters in the UK next month to celebrate its 60th anniversary. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) changed the “Mary Poppins” rating from U — meaning that it contained “no material likely to offend or harm” and is suitable for audiences four years and older — to PG, which delineates “discriminatory language,” and that some scenes may be unsuitable for young children, though unaccompanied children of any age may watch, according to The Independent. The offending language in question is the use of the word “hottentots,” which is used in the movie by Admiral Boom (Reginald Owen), including one instance in which he refers to chimney sweeps (like Bert) whose faces are covered in soot.A BBFC spokesperson told Variety that the film “includes two uses of the discriminatory term ‘hottentots.’ While ‘Mary Poppins’ has historical context, the use of discriminatory language is not condemned, and ultimately exceeds our guidelines for acceptable language at U.“We therefore classified the film PG for discriminatory language.”The word is a racially insensitive term for the Khoekhoe, an indigenous group of nomadic herders in South Africa. The slur was adopted by Dutch settlers in South Africa, thought to imitate their language, but was later used to refer to all black people, according to The Independent.
EXCLUSIVE: Ahead of its world premiere today at the Berlin Film Festival, Cohen Media Group has secured all North American distribution rights to Made In England: The Films Of Powell And Pressburger.
It’s not often that a doc about the transformative power of cinema will deliberately use bad clips of the movies it’s talking about, but that’s part of the point of this insightful, sprawling film, corralled by director David Hinton. Though the masterpieces made by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger at the height of their big-screen, Technicolor powers were visually impeccable, their subversive emotional power could still pack a punch through a 16-inch TV screen, even from the most scratched, butchered, and washed-out black-and-white prints.
