‘Life of Pi’ review: Eye-popping effects make a splash on Broadway

the new spectacle show “Life of Pi” seaworthy: stunning projections, and a better-than-necessary lead performance from the sensational Hiran Abeysekera.2 hours and 15 minutes, with one intermission. At the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, 236 W 45th Street.Working in tandem during the second act, when teenage Pi is adrift in the ocean with only dangerous zoo animals to keep him company, those fantastical images and Abeysekera’s boisterous energy create moment after moment of theatrical magic. They are sequences of pure action and ingenuity in director Max Webster’s production that do not rely on dialogue or plot to thrill us, only sheer emotion and awe.

New Mexico D.A. to Step Aside in Alec Baldwin ‘Rust’ Case, Names Two Attorneys to Take Over

Gene Maddaus Senior Media Writer Santa Fe D.A. Mary Carmack-Altwies will step aside in the prosecution of Alec Baldwin for the fatal shooting of “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, and has named two lawyers to take over the case. Carmack-Altwies appointed Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis as special prosecutors on the case. Both are private attorneys based in Albuquerque. The move comes after Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer ruled on Monday that Carmack-Altwies could not continue to prosecute the case if she appointed a special prosecutor. Baldwin and “Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed were charged in January with involuntary manslaughter for the death of Hutchins. Gutierrez Reed mistakenly loaded a live round into Baldwin’s gun. Baldwin was holding it when it fired — he has denied pulling the trigger — killing Hutchins and wounding the film’s director.

Warner Music to Lay Off 270 Staffers, Making ‘Hard Choices in Order to Evolve’

Jem Aswad Senior Music Editor Warner Music Group will eliminate 270 positions as part of a wider evolution of the company, new CEO Robert Kyncl announced to the company’s staff in an email obtained by K In order “to take advantage of the opportunities ahead of us, we need to make some hard choices in order to evolve,” according to the memo. It was not immediately clear which positions or divisions will be affected. Warner is the world’s third-largest music company and includes the labels Atlantic, Warner, 300-Elektra, Parlophone, the reissue division Rhino and others, as well as Warner Chappell Music publishing. Kyncl was announced as the new CEO last September and in February took over for Steve Cooper, who left the company after 11 years. Kyncl, who for years had bridged the tech and entertainment worlds in major roles at Netflix — including overseeing the company’s shift to streaming — and YouTube, in which he was pivotal in repairing the streaming giant’s formerly contentious relationships with music companies. His unexpected move into the top position at Warner ushers in a new kind of tech-forward leadership at major labels.
