Earlier this year, the office of Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares handed off its jurisdiction in a long-running investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct and other abuses at a hospital that serves vulnerable children. The move leaves any further charging decisions up to a local prosecutor with a tiny staff.

Virginia parents with differing viewpoints sounded off on school policies they say harmed children at Tuesday's Loudoun County Public Schools board meeting. One year ago, LCPS passed Policy 8040 to follow Virginia Department of Education guidelines put forth by the previous Democratic administration to protect transgender students.

As the battle over parental rights and protections for LGBT students heats up in Virginia, one state delegate said she will introduce a bill in the legislature's next session that would make it a crime for a parent or guardian not to affirm their child's sexual orientation or gender identity.  The move is in response to Republican Virginia Gov. A Virginia high school released students early Wednesday after the building was evacuated due to what officials described as an "incident" inside a chemistry classroom. The unspecified incident happened at Dinwiddie High School and was confined to a chemistry class, Dinwiddie County Public Schools wrote in a Facebook post.

"How can our kids learn when they're in this fight or flight mode? We wonder why the grades and proficiency levels are down so low because how can these kids learn when they're surrounded by violence," Darren Badillo, a Baltimore County Parent and Student Coalition member, told the local news outlet.  Testing has shown that many students in Baltimore are falling behind.

One adorable cat has traveled a very long way to find his forever home. Chaz, an all-white domestic shorthair cat, is currently up for adoption at King Street Cats in Alexandria, Virginia, after he was rescued in Kuwait. As a small kitten, Chaz was picked on by other cats — as discovered by a caretaker.  Chaz was brought to King Street Cats after spending a year with a rescuer — and was declared to be positive for FIV — feline immunodeficiency virus.  (HIV infects only humans, while FIV infects only cats.

Police in Prince William County, Virginia said a man has been charged with raping an underage family member multiple times. Kevin Dean Rice, 50, of Bristow, turned himself into police on Wednesday after Special Victims Bureau detectives and Child Protective Services announced a sexual assault investigation days earlier, FOX 5 reported.

One person died and two people suffered life-threatening injuries following a plane crash Thursday afternoon at Virginia's Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport, authorities said. Three people were on board the small Cessna, Virginia State Police said in a statement.The two people who were injured were rushed to a local hospital.

A northwestern Texas town is mourning the loss of two firefighters killed in a car crash while returning to the station from a call. In a Facebook post, the Dalhart Volunteer Fire Department said firefighter Brendan Torres, 19, and Chief Curtis Brown, 51, died during a collision with a semi-trailer truck Tuesday night. Both Torres and Brown were pronounced dead at the scene.
