Record collectors and music lovers have descended onto Manchester’s ‘vinyl valley’ in their droves this morning for the annual Record Store Day event. And one eager fan camped out overnight outside Piccadilly Records in order to secure an exclusive release from his favourite artist.
Daniel Bedford, 20, started the queue outside the Oldham Street record store at 11.44am on Friday, April 21, in anticipation of the store opening at 8am this morning, Saturday, April 22.
The shopper queued all day, slept out all night and beat all of the Taylor Swift fans to the front to get his hands on a copy of the Loyle Carner Yesterday’s Gone album, released as a limited edition picture disc for the annual event.

The-20-year-old, originally from Birmingham, said it was his first time attending the Record Store Day event.
He told the M.E.N: “I subscribed to Piccadilly Records newsletter and I got an email that said they had the record I was after and the email also said the queue may start on Friday around midday so I got there just in case. I thought a couple of Taylor swift fans would be before me. I thought they would be ready and waiting but I found myself alone.
“Even if there were a few Taylor Swift fans I don't think they’d be after the same record as me.”
A huge Loyle Carner fan, Daniel has now collected all three of the artist’s studio albums on vinyl. The Manchester Metropolitan University student added: “He’s one of my favourite artists and I’d never seen this album on vinyl in my searches before. You’ve got to support the artists and the stores so I decided to pick it up and now I have all of his albums on vinyl.”

Record Store Day 2023.Weekly market data from the Official Charts Company has come in today that offers a complete picture of the annual event’s success. Luminate, which recently published its Top Entertainment Trends for 2023 report, “50 per cent of consumers who have bought vinyl in the past 12 months own a record player, compared to 15per cent per cent among music listeners overall” [via Music Business Worldwide].Luminate appears to have credited those statistics largely to “superfans” whom it defines as “music listeners who spend above average (median) time AND money on music, actively discover new music, participate in music-related activities on social media, and plan on attending a live music event in the next 12 months”.The majority of music revenue (84 per cent in 2022) still comes from streaming services. That suggests that many of these “superfans” buy vinyl as part of merch – not necessarily listening to it.The news follows vinyl outselling CD in the UK for first time in 35 years, according to figures released by the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) in January.Overall music sales increased by three per cent in 2022 to almost £2billion, which is the highest figure since 2003 and nearly double the level of their low point in 2013.According to the published figures, physical sales fell slightly by 3.8 per cent to £280.4million, but levelled out as the vinyl format showed sustained growth while CD declined.Vinyl album sales grew 11 per cent to £150.5million, while CD album sales in contrast fell 17.4 per cent to £124million, the first time that vinyl has outsold CD by value since 1987.

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Break out the Windex! Audiences at CinemaCon were treated to the first-ever trailer for “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3,” the latest chapter in the romantic comedy series about culture clashes, true love, bundt cakes and the many, many uses for Windex. The third entry picks up years after the original and follows the Portokalos family as they reunite a hop, skip and a jump away from their hometown of Chicago. “A lot has happened since my big fat Greek wedding,” Nia Vardalos’ character says in a voice over. “My father passed away, and his last wish was for us to visit his childhood village in Greece and reconnect with our roots. So, we’re having a reunion.”
And so the plot thickens!
Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic Taylor Swift is looking at becoming the first artist to have an exclusive Record Store Day release enter the top 10 of the Billboard 200 album chart when the next results are reported this coming weekend. That’s because nearly all 75,000 domestic copies of her RSD-exclusive double-LP, “Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions,” are believed to have sold through within a day of having gone on sale Saturday. Even though the 75,000 copies of “Long Pond Studio Sessions” issued in the U.S. was almost four times as many copies as any RSD release has been issued with before, it was no surprise that it was a hot enough commodity to sell out in a day. The 115,000 copies that went out globally are said to be the only pressing the album will ever receive. While that might be a high quantity for anybody else, it’s worth remembering that Swift’s previous album, “Midnights,” sold about 400,000 copies in its first day out — and that was without the promise that it would never be available again.
A record store housed on a canal barge sank the night before Record Store Day as it sailed to Manchester. Rubber Ducky Records owner Myles Greenwood lost around 1,000 vinyl records as the 28ft boat went down on the Rochdale Canal on Friday.
Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic The checkout lines for Record Store Day might move more swiftly than usual this year, due to the likely numbers of customers who will be buying one exclusive album and one exclusive alone — Taylor Swift’s “Folklore: The Long Pond Sessions,” the most massively coveted item RSD has seen or ever might see. And listen, we’ll be picking it up, too… if supplies last. (The title has been pressed in quantities of 75,000 for the U.S. and 115,000 for the world — about four times as many as any previous RSD title. Will those be enough to last on shelves for even a day? We’ll find out.) But slow down, Swifties. There are 300 other new releases where that one came from, and this is a chance to indulge some other retail-therapy whims or make some new discoveries. Yes, there are hundreds of middle-aged guys outside in line behind you who weren’t motivated to get up quite so early, and why should they be the only ones who get to enjoy newly minted LPs from the Cure, Arooj Aftab, Nas, Orville Peck, Charlie Parker or the Pixies on a Saturday night? There’s more to life than hoarding Taylor Swift, and it is hoarding absolutely everything that has a “limited edition” sticker slapped on it, with no prejudice as to the genre, level of obscurity or how long the artist has been dead.
