Stepping Stones Community Larder in Castle Douglas has been officially declared open – by one of the town’s oldest residents.
Manager Leanne Latta and her staff looked on as 97-year-old Jeanie Moore cut the ribbon at the St Andrew’s Street amenity.
Jeannie is one of several residents of Bothwell House supporting Stepping Stones with regular donations to help people in Castle Douglas cope with the cost of living crisis.
Bothwell resident Jill Russell also attended the opening ceremony to see Jeannie do the honours.
Speaking after the launch last Wednesday, Leanne was delighted with the response from the general public.
She said: “The open day went great with more than 30 new memberships on the day and visits from previous members.
“We also had visits from the public health team and Sure Start Scotland who gave us very positive feedback.
“And thanks to the fantastic support of Bothwell House residents, and many other wonderful people in Castle Douglas, the community larder is there to help.
“Our mission is to make sure that no child in Castle Douglas has to go to bed hungry.”

Leanne said: “We feel that transitioning from a foodbank to a community larder allows people the dignity of choosing their own food so they can plan meals to their budget – with the help of free fresh fruit and veg to supplement their basket.
“Anyone who feels they could do with a bit of help to make the

Guy Lodge Film Critic It’s a failing of our society that we’ve allowed “interesting” to become a euphemism, a blandly veiled insult, something to say when no other praise comes to mind. Little in life is more important than interest: having it, attracting it, identifying it in any crevice of the everyday, making it strange and fresh in the process.
Back in 2009, Yorgos Lanthimos led the so-called Greek Weird Wave with the Oscar-nominated Dogtooth, an unsettling exploration of a family of teenagers kept from the world by their father in a gated estate that they could never leave. The family is rich, so they can have anything they want except the wide world and their freedom; even sex can be bought in.
