Tributes are pouring in for an award-winning search and rescue dog that has sadly passed away. Thirteen-year-old springer spaniel Diesel, who works for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, has spent time rescuing people after earthquakes in New Zealand and Nepal.
Diesel scooped a gong for 'Animal of the Year' for his life-saving work at a London awards ceremony back in 2019. His Commander Gary Carroll previously said that it was a real honour" to attend the awards ceremony.
Diesel was recognised for his contribution to both the SFRS and the UK International Search and Rescue team. But tonight, a statement was posted on social media informing everyone that he was put to sleep.
It read: "Unfortunately we have to announce that Diesel’s collar was removed for the last time today.
"He is at peace now but his memory will live on from what he has done for SFRS & UK ISAR. Stand down Diesel boy your work is done. Sleep well."
Many people have been left upset by the news, with comments being left on a Facebook associated with the pooch.
One person wrote: "So sad. Play happily over the rainbow bridge Diesel, beautiful boy. Sending love and hugs to all who knew and worked with you."
Another commented: "Such sad news. It was a pleasure to have met you. Run and play happily over the bridge x" A third said: "Run free Diesel. Thoughts are with Gary his family and Mac n Coorie.
Someone else replied: "Aw so sorry to hear this. Run free Diesel. Thoughts and condolences to those who worked with and loved him x" And a fifth said: "So sad, Run Free, beautiful boy."
