Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent After skipping Venice due to the actors’ strike, a busy Willem Dafoe is back on the festival trail, attending the 20th edition of the Marrakech Film Festival with his wife, filmmaker and actor Giada Colagrande. He spoke to Variety about his ties to Morocco, why he’s “happy to be promoting and starting to work again” now that the strike is over, and his role in Tim Burton’s upcoming “Beetlejuice 2.” How does it feel to be back in Marrakech? I’m happy to be back. Morocco for me is “The Last Temptation of Christ,” a film that was a beautiful experience.

Ben Croll This year’s Marrakech International Film Festival opened with a testament to art. Two months after a devastating earthquake, and in light of the ever-more heart-wrenching news coming out of the Middle East, the film showcase kicked off with a humanist rallying cry voiced by jury president Jessica Chastain. “In the weeks leading up to the festival, we were not sure that we would even be able to be here,” Chastain said at the Marrakech opening ceremony on Friday.

Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent The Marrakech Film Festival’s 20th edition kicks off on Friday with Richard Linklater’s action comedy “Hit Man” as its gala opening, Mads Mikkelsen being feted, and a rich roster of stars and top talents supporting a panoply of cinema from the African continent and the Arab world. The event will run Nov. 24-Dec.

As a recent new grandfather, Mads Mikkelsen couldn’t be happier, but he doesn’t smile much in his new movie. An earthy 18th-century period piece, The Promised Land sees the Dane play a hard-up veteran, Ludvig Kahlen, who is determined to turn the blasted heaths of Jutland into a thriving farmland. It’s a Western of sorts, which becomes noticeably clearer when Kahlen starts to cross swords with a competing local landowner, but, for Mikkelsen, it’s a subversive  alpha male story of the kind he does so well, from the brutal Viking fantasy Valhalla Rising to the white-cold survival drama Arctic.

“Golden Bachelor” Gerry Turner may have made host Jesse Palmer squirm by saying ‘knockin boots” about his fantasy suites, but the 72-year-old held back a lot more from his kids.“Oddly, it was almost an area where I think we kind of avoided conversation,” Turner told The Post. “They were kind of holding off, waiting to see what Dad did with it.”“And, you know, when Fantasy suite nights rolled around, it seemed very normal and natural and actually was a very much a watershed moment for my journey,” he continued.

Thematically, the connective tissue between its layers of reality, like many of those earlier films, is the notion and processing of loss.

“Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure Of Foggy Mountain” premieres on Peacock, November 17 this weekend. It is the feature-length debut of the titular comedy team Please Don’t Destroy (Ben Marshall, John Higgins, and Martin Herlihy), the trio currently the “Saturday Night Live” Digital Shorts creators.

Leo Barraclough International Features Editor Paris-based Reservoir Docs has acquired worldwide sales rights excluding Italy to “A Sudden Glimpse to Deeper Things,” a theatrical documentary by Scottish-Irish director Mark Cousins, featuring the voice of Tilda Swinton. The film, described by the producers as “visually ravishing,” explores the art of the 20th century Scottish painter Wilhelmina Barns-Graham. Swinton will voice the artist’s innermost thoughts, reading from her private diaries and notebooks, which have never before been made public.

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Neon has acquired North American rights to Sean Baker‘s new romantic comedic drama, “Anora.” Plot details have been kept under wraps for the movie, which is currently in post-production and is aiming to release in theaters in 2024. It was filmed in Brooklyn and stars Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Yuriy Borisov, Karren Karagulian and Vache Tovmasyan.
