Original ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Directors Were ‘Abandoned by Hollywood’ After ‘Reviled’ 1993 Film. Then Quentin Tarantino Helped Vindicate Them

Ethan Shanfeld Last month, Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel went to the theater to see “Super Mario Bros.,” a movie they directed 30 years ago — and haven’t watched since. The live-action 1993 film, starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigi, bombed at the box office and landed on various “Worst Movies of All Time” lists, later developing a passionate cult following. In the directors’ own words, “Super Mario Bros.” was so “reviled” that it left a “black mark” on the married couple’s careers. That is, until a midnight screening held at Quentin Tarantino’s New Beverly Cinema “washed away the stain.”

Former Luigi Actor John Leguizamo Says ‘Hell No’ to Watching ‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Due to Casting: ‘They Messed Up the Inclusion’

Zack Sharf Digital News Director John Leguizamo is doubling down on criticizing Universal and Illumination’s animated film “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which casts Chris Pratt and Charlie Day in the leading voice roles of Mario and Luigi. Leguizamo brought Luigi to life in a live-action format opposite Bob Hoskins’ Mario in 1993’s “Super Mario Bros.” The actor told TMZ on the day “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” opened in theaters that he won’t be watching it due to the casting. “No I will not [be watching]. They could’ve included a Latin character,” Leguizamo said. “Like I was groundbreaking and then they stopped the groundbreaking. They messed up the inclusion. They dis-included. Just cast some Latin folk! We’re 20% of the population. The largest people of color group and we are underrepresented.”

What is happening with the current DCEU now that James Gunn is taking over and changing the entire direction of DC Studios? Well, there are four DCEU films still to be released this year, and one of them, “Shazam! Fury Of The Gods,” has already tanked. That likely means the end of that franchise.

Cannes 2023: Thierry Fremaux on the Festival’s Relationship With Hollywood, Scorsese, Netflix, Oscars and TikTok (EXCLUSIVE)

Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Can the Cannes Film Festival top itself after a 2022 edition that premiered three picture nominees, “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Triangle of Sadness,” and “Elvis”? Cannes chief Thierry Frémaux certainly hopes so. In his first interview about the upcoming 76th edition, Fremaux tells Variety about his efforts to pull together another milestone edition, talks about his failed attempt to get a woman to preside over this year’s jury and his hopes to lure prestige U.S. indies, along with Hollywood studio movies, after proving once again last year that Cannes can be a strong launchpad for the awards season. But some things won’t change, as Netflix isn’t planning a return to the festival. Other streamers, like AppleTV+, however, are expected on the Croisette with Martin Scorsese’s movie “Flowers of the Killer Moon.” On the sponsor side, Cannes will be working with TikTok while keeping a close eye on the social media site’s political ties. The Official Selection will be unveiled in mid-April in Paris.

Steve Martin Opens Up in New Audiobook Based on a Year of Interviews With Adam Gopnik (EXCLUSIVE)

Todd Spangler NY Digital Editor A bumper crop of Steve Martins will be on display in a new audiobook coming out this spring from Pushkin Industries. “So Many Steves: Afternoons With Steve Martin” will be published on May 2, 2023, by Pushkin, the audio production company co-founded by Malcolm Gladwell and Jacob Weisberg. The project condenses a year’s worth of conversations between Martin, 77, and his friend of more than three decades, New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik. In the audiobook, according to Pushkin, Martin is “more candid than he’s ever been” about his many lives — as a comedian, actor, writer, musician, magician, art collector and more. Over several sessions, all recorded in Martin’s Upper West Side apartment, “So Many Steves” features commentary about Martin’s creative pursuits along with never-before-shared anecdotes from life on set. In their conversations, Martin reflects on his career, from his early days working as a magician to his rise to Hollywood stardom, and what inspires him to keep challenging himself as an artist. Martin, with banjo in hand, scores the audiobook himself.
