A Belfast content creator has raised concerns about the surge of TikTok videos promoting sunbeds and tanning products, including nasal sprays. Shannon Mitchell, 27, who has a following of over 150,000, has shared advice urging followers to avoid using such products and revelaed her own negative experiences. Shannon began using sunbeds four years ago, intermittently booking sessions until she decided to stop in July 2022.
During that time, she suffered side-effects such as premature skin ageing and an increase in the number of moles. She also expressed regret over her use of nasal sprays, which are often endorsed alongside products such as tanning injections. "There were stages where if I was going on a big night out or if I was going on holiday, I would have went every other day on sunbeds and not thought twice about it," she said in an interview with the BBC.
"I can't even judge other people for doing them because I was being told the dangers of them. My back is covered in moles. I've had them checked to thankfully they're all fine.
But if anything does happen in the future with that I've only myself to blame because I was the one that went on sunbeds." Speaking to OK!, Victoria Evans, Education Manager at Dermalogica, said: "Sunbeds are not safe and that’s a fact.There is so much evidence to prove sunbeds give out the same harmful UV rays as the sun but at a much greater intensity, often 10-15 times higher than the midday Mediterranean sun. She continued: “Sunbed use dramatically increases your risk of cell damage and skin cancer.The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified sunbeds as a Group 1 carcinogen, this is the highest cancer risk category.
