Thousands of older people living in Scotland are being urged to contact a dedicated national advice service to get help claiming Pension Credit from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Advice Direct Scotland is urging pensioners across the country not to miss out on the £3,900 annual income boost and additional cost of living payments worth £599.
The UK Government has said new applications for Pension Credit made before phone lines close on Friday, December 8 or online at GOV.UK before midnight on Sunday, December 10, which later turns out to be successful, will also be eligible for the £300 cost of living payment.
This is because Pension Credit is a retrospective benefit that can be claimed up to three months historically, taking it to within the qualifying period (August 18-September 17). Successful claimants may also qualify for the final cost of living payment worth £299, due before next Spring.
Pension Credit is a form of financial support that tops-up the income of people over State Pension age who fall below a minimum income threshold. The DWP guidance on this states that if your total weekly income is below ££240.90 if you are single or £351.45 if you are part of a couple, then you should check if you are eligible for Pension Credit.
The payment is now worth around £3,900 each year, however, the latest figures show that up to 880,000 eligible people could be missing out on this crucial financial support.
Advice Direct Scotland is urging pensioners to check their eligibility on the dedicated Pension Credit calculator on GOV.UK here.
But they can also use the online benefits calculator provided by Advice Direct Scotland which allows individuals to assess their entitlement to both devolved and reserved
