Alison Hammond and Josie Gibson have been hit with complaints over a question they asked Sir Chris Whitty during his appearance on This Morning. The former chief medical officer appeared on the ITV daytime show on Thursday (October 5) to discuss the pledge announced by Rishi Sunak that would see the legal age for smoking rise by one year every year.
The Prime Minister has described his plan to increase the legal smoking age annually as the "biggest public health intervention in a generation". Under the plan announced in his Conservative Party conference speech, the proposed legislation for England will make it an offence for anyone born on or after January 1, 2009 to be sold tobacco products.
This has the potential to phase out smoking in young people almost completely as early as 2040 and it is hoped it will prevent tens of thousands of deaths and save the NHS billions of pounds.

Discussing if this could become a reality, Sir Chris explained: "I do and what was really striking is, when we raised the age of sale here in the UK from 16 to 18, that led to a real drop in smoking and what we’re hope is, as it steadily moves up the ages, we’ll end up in a situation where no one is smoking.
"The reason that’s so important is the range of problems this causes, range from when people are pregnant, stillbirths for example, all the way through to cancers and heart diseases, right up to the end, stroke and dementia. Smoking is so bad and actually doing anything we can to the point we have none is just amazing."
