At the end of Tuesday's show, This Morning favourite Alison Hammond, 48, confirmed her regular co-presenter Dermot O'Leary, 49, would miss filming on Wednesday as he will be celebrating his milestone 50th birthday.
Dermot is one of the show's most trusted faces and has already been tipped to join Holly Willoughby, 42, as Phillip's replacement after he announced he was quitting the show with immediate effect. The 62-year-old's dramatic exit has left producers - and the bookies - scrambling to decide who will join Holly on the show from Mondays to Wednesdays - with Alison, Dermot and Rylan Clark all in the running.
Dermot and Alison, who usually only host on Fridays and during busy holiday periods, took the This Morning reins after Holly announced she was taking a two-week break following her long-time co-presenter's shock exit. Prior to Phillip's departure, rumours emerged of a feud between him and Holly, who joined Phillip in the main line-up in 2009, and ITV bosses reportedly felt it was harming the show's reputation.
As favourites with the viewers, Alison and Dermot were the obvious replacement but according to The Sun, Dermot will be replaced on Wednesday by another familiar This Morning face - Irish presenter Craig Doyle, 52, who has previously impressed viewers with other stints on the show. As he didn't receive the usual "send off show", some of Phillip's former colleagues have chosen to publicly acknowledge his departure and thank him for his two-decade service to the show, while others have stayed noticeably tight-lipped.
