It's gone 7.30am and a police officer is carving through a metal shutter in the shadow of Strangeways Prison.
Amid the hum of traffic travelling into Manchester city centre, orange sparks fly and the sound of grinding metal fills the air.
After a while, the shutter is removed and a battering ram is used to smash through the front door of a shop.

Inside lies a room filled with fake designer clothing, jewellery and bags. Several police officers rush in and push through another door to reveal a warren of windowless units - each one filled with hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of counterfeit goods.
Walls and counters are lined with everything from Yeezy trainers to Louis Vuitton handbags, Apple AirPods and Rolex watches - all of which are suspected fakes and are about to be seized by police.
It's the same story in the shop next door, and the one next to that. This morning's raids on a row of shops on Manchester's infamous 'Counterfeit Street' are just the latest carried out by police over the last five months.
Last autumn, Greater Manchester Police launched a huge crackdown on the counterfeit trade that has blighted this area for decades. As part of Operation Vulcan, the force says it has managed to dismantle the vast majority of the counterfeit trade in this part of the city.
Where once there were more than 200 shops selling fake goods around Bury New Road and Great Ducie Street, there are now believed to be fewer than ten. It has prompted one senior detective to declare it "the end of Counterfeit Street".
"This is absolutely the end," said Detective Chief Inspector Jen Kelly, one of the lead officers on Operation Vulcan.
