Barry Robson admits being time served as the master's apprentice under Derek McInnes at Aberdeen was an eye-opening affair.
terrific little movie, clearly indebted to the Amblin movies of the 1980s and early 1990s, with some fun performances and an absolutely adorable creature in Chupa.TheWrap spoke to director Jonás Cuarón, who talked about those reference points, figuring out how to film the creature and what drew him to his next directorial project – the “Spider-Man”-adjacent Sony movie “El Muerto,” starring Bad Bunny. What movies were you looking at when putting “Chupa” together?Well, look, this is a movie I did for my kids. And it was inspired by them.
The reviews are in from the world premiere of Lee Cronin‘s “Evil Dead Rise” at SXSW 2023 last month. And the verdict? Pretty solid all around (although The Playlist’s review didn’t match the consensus).
Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic According to legend, the chupacabra is a fearsome, blood-sucking beast — a lean and intimidating animal you wouldn’t want to come across feasting on your livestock at night. Not so the cub three kids nickname “Chupa” (Spanish for “sucker,” short for its species) in Mexican director Jonás Cuarón’s family-friendly Netflix movie. This one looks like a fuzzy-wuzzy baby lynx, with inquisitive amber eyes and a pair of awkward azure wings it still hasn’t learned how to use. A single glimpse of this oversized kitten and you’ll want one for your own, if not the plush version to snuggle up with at night. That’s a pretty radical reimagining of a mythical monster usually discussed in horror terms, but an inspired way to bring a sense of Amblin-esque wonder south of the border, attempting to do for a legendary Latin American creature what films like “E.T.” did for extra-terrestrials — which is to say, turn something typically perceived as a threat into everyone’s new fantasy best friend. Cuarón doesn’t exactly hide his influences here, paying overt homage to Steven Spielberg throughout. He even goes so far as to tack a “Jurassic Park” poster on the wall of 13-year-old Alex’s (Evan Whitten) all-American bedroom.
EXCLUSIVE: Andie MacDowell (Groundhog Day), Carmen Ejogo (True Detective) and Kevin Pollak (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) have joined Michael Keaton and Mila Kunis in comedy Goodrich, which began filming in LA this week.
Murtada Elfadl In the pleasantly amusing “Praise This,” Chloe Bailey is the self professed nonreligious Sam, a musical artist in the making who finds her niche in Atlanta’s competitive gospel youth choir scene. Director Tina Gordon crafts a musical that’s carried through by a charming cast and highly entertaining ensemble performances. “Praise This” adds a mostly delightful entry to the genre, even if it doesn’t offer a unique take. More successfully it acts as a winning introductory calling card to the acting and musical talents of its rising star, the slightly-older sister of upcoming “The Little Mermaid” actor Halle Bailey and one-half of the sibling R&B duo Chloe x Halle. The story starts with Sam forced to leave Los Angeles by her dad because of some rebellious behavior. He entrusts her care to her aunt and uncle (Kendrick Cross and Janora McDuffie), but the person who takes full charge of Sam’s new life in Atlanta is her cousin Jess (Anjelika Washington). Immediately calling her a sister-cousin and introducing Sam to her life, friends and choir practice, Jess is the type of relative most people try to avoid, driven away by their too boisterous enthusiasm. Ever the smart person, it doesn’t take long for Sam to realize that joining Jess’ praise team in the lead-up to a national championship competition might be her way out of Atlanta and into a successful musical career. And so an odd-couple friendship is born.
