It takes a brave individual to appear on The Masked Singer with the potential for some rather awkward moments before your unmasking - something comedian and musical theatre performer Jason Manford learned the hard way. Jason, 42, appeared on the show's first UK series, in which he disguised himself as 'Hedgehog', and left viewers stumped, with guesses including Michael Ball, Eddie Izzard, and Alfie Boe.
Theatre legend Alfie, 50, has often been guessed as various masked individuals but is yet to appear on the show. Speaking exclusively to OK!, at the National Lottery's Big Night of Musicals, Alfie revealed that he had a rather awkward interaction with Jason, amid his stint on the show.
He told us: "When Jason was on The Masked Singer he called me up and said 'Alfie do you keep getting phone calls and texts saying 'Are you the hedgehog' "'You know what? I do mate every single week' so I said 'what I'm going to do is I'm going to watch it and see what he's like. "So I watched it and called [Jason] back and said 'I've watched it... he's rubbish.' And two weeks later it was announced that Jason was the Hedgehog, and I was like 'so I think I owe you an apology'" Alfie, who has portrayed Jean Valjean in numerous productions of Les Miserables, also revealed the one role he felt rather ill-equipped to perform.
Following a stint as Valjean on Broadway, Alfie was then cast as JM Barrie in Finding Neverland, a role that required quite a lot of dancing. "It was ridiculous with the dancing, I'm not a dancer," Alfie explained. "They said to me, this is not about the dancing, this is about the singing because we know you're a singer, not a dancer.
