Netflix thriller ‘The Watcher’ leaves viewers frustrated with “horrendous” ending

Netflix thriller series The Watcher has been criticised by viewers over its climax.Starring Naomi Watts and Bobby Canavale, the seven-episode miniseries is based on the true story of the Broaddus family who, after moving into their dream home in Westfield, New Jersey, are harassed through letters signed by a stalker named ‘The Watcher’.The show is created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, known for their collaborations on Glee, The Politician, Ratched and most recently, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.Much like the actual case, which went unsolved, The Watcher ends on a similarly ambiguous note, with no concrete reveal of who the stalker actually is.Some viewers, while praising the series, have expressed their frustration at the show’s lack of resolution, writing: “Binge watched the watcher today. I am in no way content at the ending.

Naomi Watts and ‘Watcher’ Co-Stars on Why There’s a ‘Real Appetite’ for Ryan Murphy’s True-Crime Dramas

Elizabeth Taylor The premiere of Ryan Murphy’s latest true crime Netflix series, “The Watcher,” comes on the heels of the huge success of his “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” “The Watcher” is a haunting limited series based on the real-life, unsolved mystery about a family being stalked in their home. “I think there’s a real appetite for it right now,” star Naomi Watts told Variety at the show’s New York premiere at the Paris Theater on Wednesday. “I’m trying to figure out what it is, but I can theorize. But these are really dark, chaotic things going on in the world right now. I think you want to understand why these things happen and who would you be and how would you cope.”

‘The Watcher’ Sucks the Suspense From a True-Life Horror Story: TV Review

Daniel D'Addario Chief TV Critic As it’s gone on, Ryan Murphy’s Netflix deal has revealed how many topics fascinate him — and how rigidly fixed in the past are his manners of addressing them. Has he been able to get beyond the franchises he started on FX? Consider, for instance, his recent smash “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”; the surfeit of punctuation in the title seems to suggest a sublimated desire to call it what it is, another installment of the true-life “American Crime Story” in all but name. “Halston’s” gilded retelling of recent-ish celebrity culture recalled “Feud,” with the adversaries, perhaps, being the designer and his own ego. And now, with his new series “The Watcher,” Murphy has reverse-engineered an “American Horror Story,” taking a true story and finding within or beyond its nuances some Murder House melodramatics.

The real Jeffrey Dahmer: What Ryan Murphy and Netflix get wrong

Netflix butcher key facts about the notorious Jeffrey Dahmer murders? The Milwaukee, Wisconsin, crime reporter who broke the news of the infamous serial killer — who diabolically tortured and murdered 17 boys and men through the late 1970s and early 1990s — says so.Journalist and author Anne E. Schwartz slammed the new Evan Peters-starring series, “Dahmer: Monster — The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” saying that creator Ryan Murphy and team took so much “artistic license” that the show “does not bear a great deal of resemblance to the facts of the case.”“When people are watching Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series and saying, ‘Oh my God, this is terrible,’ I want to tell them it didn’t necessarily turn out that way,” Schwartz, who wrote “Monster: The True Story of the Jeffrey Dahmer Murders,” told the Independent.Firstly, she took exception to the portrayal of Milwaukee cops as being racist homophobes as she has known members of the force for years.“I’ve spent a lot of time with them, interviewing the people who were at the scene.

Ryan Murphy’s Jeffrey Dahmer Series on Netflix Unsettles Twitter

Amber Dowling Netflix was the most talked about streaming service for the week of Sept. 19 to 25 thanks to the debut of “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” The Ryan Murphy-created series rose to the top of Variety’s Trending TV chart following its full season debut on Sept. 23 with more than 918,000 engagements on Twitter.  Over the weekend, the show shot to No. 1 on the streamer’s most-watched list in countries around the world. As some learned more about the story of the real-life serial killer through Evan Peters’ portrayal, others pleaded with viewers not to fantasize about him or romanticize the killer simply because of the actor portraying the figure. Many more urged people to remember the victims: the 17 men and boys that Dahmer was convicted of killing in 1992.

Netflix’s Jeffrey Dahmer Series ‘Monster’ Marks a Grim, All Too Predictable Addition to Ryan Murphy’s Oeuvre: TV Review

Caroline Framke Chief TV Critic It takes six episodes for “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” (yes, that is indeed the show’s full name) to meaningfully expand beyond the scope of either the serial killer or Evan Peters’ portrayal of him. In that episode, “Silenced,” directed by Paris Barclay and written by Janet Mock and David McMillan, the story of Dahmer victim Tony Anthony Hughes comes to the forefront. Tony (played with warm charm by “Deaf U” alum Rodney Burford) was a gregarious aspiring model with a big heart. He was Deaf, Black, gay, a great dancer. His friends and mother (a moving Karen Malina White) loved him very much. With every moment Burford gets to give Tony new life, the inevitable end of “Silenced” becomes all the more harrowing, and the cops’ inaction to find the truth all the more infuriating. But as the show’s nonsensical maze of a title suggests, this episode is an exception rather than the rule. Otherwise, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s new Netflix series is a grim, sepia-toned slog that rarely justifies its own existence.
