‘The Story of Souleymane’ Review: A Superb Lead Electrifies a Propulsive, Compassionate Immigration Drama

Jessica Kiang It’s not only because of its similar time frame that Boris Lojkine‘s hurtling, headlong social-issues drama “The Story of Souleymane” recalls “Two Days, One Night” by the Dardenne brothers. Lojkine’s film, which was awarded the jury prize and a well-deserved best actor award in the Un Certain Regard competition in Cannes, is similarly invested in its electrifying lead — non-professional Abou Sangare, making an unforgettably persuasive and poignant debut — and similarly effective in maintaining a level of urgency and high-stakes personal peril that few genre thrillers can muster.

Its essential workers begin corralling the huge resources needed to maintain its creaking infrastructure and feed the tens of millions of people who will wake up and take public transport to work.

‘Motel Destino’ Review: Karim Aïnouz’s Horned-Up Neon-Noir Keeps Its Cool While Getting Hot and Heavy

Guy Lodge Film Critic Welcome to the Motel Destino, which may be some distance from the Hotel California, but is very much programmed to receive — or give, if that’s your preference. With mirrors on the ceiling but definitely no pink champagne on ice, the run-down roadside sex den that houses most of Karim Aïnouz’s Olympically horny new film isn’t so much a palace of pleasure as a this-will-do hideaway for the illicitly amorous couples (or throuples, or more, no judgment here) checking into any of its hastily wiped-down rooms.

‘Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In’ Review: Blazing Action Delights Get Marred by Languid Soap Opera

Siddhant Adlakha Unfolding in the cramped corridors of Hong Kong’s Kowloon Walled City (it was one of the most dangerously dense urban areas on Earth before being demolished in 1993), Soi Cheang‘s ’80s-set “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In” delivers on its blockbuster action promise. However, its martial arts spectacle is scattered across a sprawling refugees-and-triads saga that, while adequately laying foundation for the aforementioned fisticuffs, is seldom coherent or engaging on its own.

Box Office: ‘IF’ Stumbles on Opening Day With $10.3 Million, ‘The Strangers: Chapter 1’ Unmasking Third Place

J. Kim Murphy Paramount’s family comedy “IF” is leading domestic charts in its opening after earning $10.3 million from more than 4,041 locations across Friday and preview screenings. But the John Krasinski-directed fantasy feature has decidedly fallen behind its projections heading into the weekend, which had originally forecast a debut around $40 million.

‘Outer Range’ Star Josh Brolin and EP Charles Murray on the Sci-Fi Western’s Wild Second Season — and Possible Future: ‘This Has Its Hook In Me’

Hunter Ingram SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers from the entire second season of “Outer Range,” now streaming on Prime Video. “It makes all the sense in the world!” Forgive us for laughing, but that is the craziest thing someone could say about Prime Video’s “Outer Range,” a sci-fi western about a bottomless, time-traveling black hole on the Wyoming ranch of Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin). And yet, that’s what Royal’s nemesis Wayne Tillerson (Will Patton) proclaims right before he takes a swan dive into that hole in the Season 2 finale. It’s a legitimately hilarious moment, because — even for those who have been paying attention — “Outer Range” isn’t the easiest to follow.

Jordan Moreau John Krasinski and Ryan Reynolds are imagining box office success this weekend. Their new movie “IF,” which stands for and follows “imaginary friends,” has made $1.75 million in previews so far at the box office. The family-friendly Paramount film is on track to dethrone last week’s box office champ, Disney’s “The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.” “IF” is projected to make around $40 million in its opening weekend, with some estimates lower at $35 million and others as high as $45 million.

‘The Strangers: Chapter 1’ Review: Horror Tropes Gone Wrong In Renny Harlin’s Latest

The landscape of horror cinema is strewn with sequels, prequels, reboots, and remakes—many of which fail to capture the essence of their predecessors. My philosophy is, If a film is to be rebooted, remade, or re-purposed, it must find a way to distinguish itself and justify its existence. Lionsgate‘s The Strangers: Chapter 1, directed by Renny Harlin and written by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland, does neither. This latest installment is a lackluster attempt to revive a franchise that should have remained in its original, standalone glory. With wooden performances from Madelaine Petsch and Ryan Bown, this film only serves to remind us of what was once innovative in The Strangers (2008), is now rendered commercial, and lifeless.
