‘The Simpsons’ Makes History With First Deaf Voice Actor and Use of American Sign Language (EXCLUSIVE)

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at LargeWhen “The Simpsons” creative team decided to use American Sign Language in this Sunday’s episode, there was one hitch: The show’s animated characters have only four fingers.“That was a little tricky, especially because the one thing we’re translating is Shakespeare,” says writer Loni Steele Sosthand. “But I think we pulled it off.”Sosthand, who joined “The Simpsons” in 2020, is the writer behind the show’s April 10 installment, “The Sound of Bleeding Gums.” The episode is not only notable for featuring the first-ever use of ASL on “The Simpsons,” but it also includes the show’s first-ever deaf voice actors. The story centers on Lisa Simpson, who discovers that her favorite musician and mentor, the late saxophonist Bleeding Gums Murphy, had a son who was born deaf.

‘The Bubble’: Why Judd Apatow Produced His Netflix Movie ‘Like It Was a 2-Hour ‘Simpsons’ Episode’

“The Bubble” tells the story of a cast and crew assembling to shoot a franchise blockbuster sequel in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic (inspired by the difficult productions of “Jurassic World: Dominion” and others). Trapped in a hotel for isolation purposes, the cast and crew slowly go mad, and Apatow’s film tackles many of the same issues everyone else experienced during the pandemic – except on a heightened scale.Like with his previous films including “Knocked Up” and “Trainwreck,” Apatow assembled a knockout cast of comedic talent that includes Karen Gillan, Keegan-Michael Key, David Duchovny, Fred Armisen and Leslie Mann.

‘The Simpsons’ parody Joe Rogan in divisive new episode

The Simpsons appeared to mock comedian Joe Rogan in the long-running show’s latest episode, in which Homer meets a character resembling the podcaster. The series’ newest episode, ‘You Won’t Believe What This Episode is About – Act Three Will Shock You!’, sees Homer Simpson “cancelled” for neglecting the family’s dog, Santa’s Little Helper, before accidentally knocking Reverend Lovejoy out of a church window.Although not mentioned by name, the bald podcaster character who appears later in the episode has been interpreted by several viewers as representing Rogan.Reaction to the episode, largely based on news reports of the brief clip which features the Rogan lookalike, has been largely negative on social media. Twitter users joked about the presenter’s drug use, questioned his status as a “right-wing podcaster”, and suggested The Simpsons tackled the same subject more effectively on 1994 episode ‘Homer Badman’.Joe Rogan will hear about this but he'll be high and forget then think he had a dream where he was on the simpsons https://t.co/3FjSmy1Yop— Andy (@HailGribble4Lyf) March 15, 2022I'm not even a Joe Rogan hater but there's no clearer sign that The Simpsons needs to end their run.

Levi’s ‘Simpsons’ Collection Is Actually Really, Really Good

Anna Tingley If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Variety may receive an affiliate commission.Springfield residents are no strangers to a fashion moment. Homer and Marge walked down a Balenciaga runway during the Spanish brand’s virtual runway show last October, while Adidas’s long-running partnership with the show has produced a handful of sneaker designs inspired by characters such as Moe and Bart. Now, the iconic imagery from the CW series dons corduroy and denim pieces in a new collection by Levi’s. The Spring/Summer 2022 streetwear line immortalizes fan-favorite characters, such as on the back of an over-sized denim jacket featuring a patch of a crazy-eyed Bart, and a selection of ringer t-shirts embossed with the meme-able dancing Lisa and Milliner on the front.Other highlights of the collection include a reversible puffer vest patterned with blue skies and clouds, a clear nod to the series iconic opening credits.  But the lineup’s references to Springfield Elementary are what give it a trendy streetwear feel: corduroy jacket and pants evoke a vintage school uniform, while a wide range of hoodies and tees are imprinted with scenes set at the series’ fictional school. This is the latest of many pop-culture collections that Levi’s has launched in recent months. Last summer, the brand came out with a tie dye-heavy capsule in honor of the Grateful Dead. More recent customizable collections feature imagery inspired by everything from Mickey Mouse and Keith Haring to Pokémon.Check out the best pieces from the Simpsons x Levi’s collection below: BUY NOW: $168 Buy It

The Simpsons showrunner Al Jean has discussed an episode which viewers have claimed predicted the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The episode, titled ‘Simpson Tide’ which aired in March 1998, saw Homer Simpson join the US Navy and accidentally fire his captain into Russian waters. This is followed by a sequence where Russia reveals the Soviet Union never actually dissolved: as troops descend on the streets, the Berlin Wall is resurrected and Lenin is brought back to life from his glass coffin. After the clip was shared widely on social media following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s orders to attack Ukraine on Thursday (February 24), Al Jean responded to The Hollywood Reporter, describing the prediction as “sadly more the norm”.Simpsons called it… #Russia #SovietUnion #Putin pic.twitter.com/9OQ9nSpiGF— Matthew Walton (@Waltonamo) February 22, 2022“In terms of predictions, there are two kinds we have: The trivial, like Don Mattingly getting in trouble for his hair in ‘Homer At The Bat’,” Jean said. “And then there are predictions like this.
