Why Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is so controversial

Ryan Murphy's latest TV project, starring Evan Peters, would focus on the real-life horrors of Jeffrey Dahmer, not everyone was impressed. Watch Below: Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story TrailerWhile the famed producer had a number of widely successful horror projects under his belt, not everyone was excited about his leap into real-life crime. Despite true crime continuing to gain popularity over the last few years, through podcasts, books and documentaries, turning the horrors of real life into a Netflix drama crosses a line for many. As Evan Peters gains applause for his disturbing portrayal of one of Americas worst serial killers in Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, a conversation has begun on how victims and real crimes should be treated in Hollywood. Now, the family of the victims are joining the conversation, responding to the Netflix show that depicts in gruesome detail how their loved ones were murdered. Not everyone is excited about Ryan Murphy's latest project.Rita Isbell, the sister of Errol Lindsey, who was one of the last victims of Dahmer, recently wrote an essay for Insider about how the new Netflix show had affected her and her family. In 1992, Rita gave a victim impact statement at Dahmer’s sentencing - a statement which was recreated word-for-word in the new show. “It bothered me,” she wrote,  “especially when I saw myself — when I saw my name come across the screen and this lady saying verbatim exactly what I said.”“That’s why it felt like reliving it all over again.

Black Music Action Coalition Readies Second Annual Gala in Beverly Hills, Looks to Nashville for Future Advocacy

Thania Garcia In spring 2020, the U.S. came to terms with its role in racial inequality on the heels of a tragedy: the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. That singular moment compelled many, including those in the music business, to pledge funds and action. It also gave birth to the Black Music Action Coalition, a collective of Black creators, activists and change-makers who have diligently kept the issue in the headlines and on the minds of corporate parents.  On Sept. 22, the organization — whose leadership includes industry veterans Damien Smith, Caron Veazey and Shawn Holiday, among others — celebrates its second annual Music in Action gala in Beverly Hills, where honorees include Lil Baby, Sony Music Publishing chairman Jon Platt, 300 Elektra Entertainment’s Kevin Liles and 1619 Project creator Nikole Hannah-Jones. It promises to be a gathering of heavies, as last year’s inaugural fete — Variety is a media sponsor — drew the Weeknd, Motown chairwoman Ethiopia Habtemariam and attorney Ben Crump.

Netflix’s ‘The Real Bling Ring’ Adds Little to the Alexis Haines Story: TV Review

Daniel D'Addario Chief TV Critic The story of Alexis Haines’ entanglement with a circle of Los Angeles-area home invaders has been told multiple times over: In the reporting of Nancy Jo Sales, who profiled her for Vanity Fair in 2010; on her own reality show, “Pretty Wild,” which aired on E! in 2010; and in Sofia Coppola’s 2013 film “The Bling Ring,” based on Sales’ work. Now, Haines (formerly Alexis Neiers), along with former associate Nick Norgo (formerly Nick Prugo), attempts to set the record straight in the Netflix documentary series “The Real Bling Ring: Hollywood Heist.” The three-episode series sheds little light, and bulks out its running time with idle musings on fame that feel warmed over from the early 2010s. It’s not that Haines’ and Norgo’s stories, told with both respective parties’ permission in this doc, don’t have inherent interest: Both of them became entranced by the concept of celebrity and, as part of the “bling ring” cabal, stole cash and belongings from the homes of famous people, including Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and Orlando Bloom. (One of their victims, “The Hills” personality Audrina Patridge, speaks to the camera for “The Real Bling Ring.”)
