We woke up to the first snowfall of the year this morning and as I type this in my kitchen in Prestwich, it’s still coming down pretty thick and fast. I know it can be a pain in a***, as anyone who found themselves stuck in traffic, getting a text to say their kid’s school had closed or waiting for a train that never arrived will testify.
But snow can also lift the spirits of even the most cynical of souls. And it’s not just me saying that.
There’s a whole host of psychological studies that suggest snow is good for our mental health. It could be to do with how it reflects the light, brightening up the long, dark winter days, or how it dampens sound and makes everything feel calm and peaceful.
Other research has found the nostalgic memories of childhood it evokes help boost our mood. Or it could be simply that snow encourages us to get wrapped up and go outside for a walk.
“Snowfall may present an opportunity for us to play like children outdoors, when we can just go out and enjoy ourselves in a non-self-conscious way,” said Noel Bell, psychotherapist and spokesperson for the UK Council for Psychotherapy. “In this way, snow can help us to release our inhibitions.
“Since snow is usually only around for a limited period of time we might feel compelled to enjoy the moment and become more mindful as a result.”
It might have all melted by the time you’re reading this, but if you do enjoy a bit of snow, the good news is forecasters are predicting there’s more to come in Greater Manchester tomorrow and Thursday.
