If you feel like you’re about to expire from the heat, relief is coming. Although it will be in the form of thunderstorms, which are due to hit our region tomorrow. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms for 2pm until 9pm for most of Greater Manchester. Temperatures will remain at around 27C but the mercury will drop to 21C on Monday.
That’s certainly hot enough, but don’t let a bit of sweat put you off practising your backdrop, spins and kicks ahead of BBC Radio 6 Music’s Northern Soul all nighter this weekend.
The station is featuring a special edition of The Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show to mark the 50th anniversary of the legendary Wigan Casino. It will run from 6pm on Saturday, running until 8pm on Sunday alongside a broadcast of Stuart Maconie’s Northern Soul Prom - which was recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in July.
Wigan Casino was the place to be for music fans between 1973 and 1981. Housed in the former Empress Ballroom, coach loads of clubbers would arrive at the Casino - which was often open until 6am in its heyday - to spend hours queuing up for just a glimmer of the action.
At 2am on September 23, 1973, Wigan Casino hosted its first ever Northern Soul all-nighter and it became a quick hit. Alongside DJ Winstanley, the likes of Ian Fishwick, Kev Roberts and Richard Searling would all take turns spinning the latest tracks in-between performances from the likes of soul legends Jackie Wilson, Edwin Starr and Junior Walker.

A BMW driver who killed a father-of-three while over the legal drink-drive limit has been jailed for seven years. The busiest road in Manchester city centre will be closed this weekend. Transport bosses have announced that the Mancunian Way will be shut in both directions from 5am on Saturday, September 9 to 7pm on Sunday, September 10.
