Todd Spangler NY Digital Editor Naughty Dog, the game studio behind megahit “The Last of Us,” has released deeply disappointing news to many fans: It has decided to pull the plug on its multiplayer project dubbed The Last of Us Online to focus fully on single-player games. “There’s no easy way to say this: We’ve made the incredibly difficult decision to stop development on that game,” Naughty Dog announced in a blog post Thursday.
The company continued, “We know this news will be tough for many, especially our dedicated The Last of Us Factions community, who have been following our multiplayer ambitions ardently. We’re equally crushed at the studio as we were looking forward to putting it in your hands.” According to the company, the multiplayer team had been in preproduction on The Last of Us Online since Naughty Dog was working on “The Last of Us Part II.” But in preparing to ramp up to full production of the multiplayer game, “the massive scope of our ambition became clear,” Naughty Dog said in the blog post.
“To release and support The Last of Us Online we’d have to put all our studio resources behind supporting post-launch content for years to come, severely impacting development on future single-player games. So, we had two paths in front of us: become a solely live service games studio or continue to focus on single-player narrative games that have defined Naughty Dog’s heritage.” “The Last of Us” was adapted into an HBO series by game co-creator Neil Druckmann and showrunner Craig Mazin — which became an instant hit when it premiered in January 2023.
Variety TV critic Aramide Tinubu named it her top pick among the best shows of the year. Before the Season 1 finale aired, HBO renewed “The Last of Us” for Season

a lot of shows out there — but these are the series that managed to hit a home run week after week without any letdowns in their story arcs or performances.A serial killer, a mysterious writer (played by “The Crown’s” Emma Corrin), a sinister billionaire (Clive Owen), the unique setting of a luxury hotel in Iceland and a multi-layered mystery: this Hulu show was full of juicy ingredients, and it used them well. It also mixed prescient big-picture topics (AI, the climate crisis) with more intimate relatable character drama (Corrin’s character, Darcy, having unresolved feelings for her ex-boyfriend, played by rising star Harris Dickinson).

HBO has confirmed that the highly anticipated new seasons of The Last Of Us, Euphoria and more will premiere only sometime in 2025.This past weekend, Max confirmed the release windows for several of its biggest shows in its ‘One To Watch’ trailer, which showcases new originals, returning series, and more on its upcoming streaming slate. While they don’t have confirmed release dates just yet, The Last Of Us, Euphoria and The White Lotus are among the biggest titles headlining HBO’s 2025 slate. Showcased towards the end of the trailer, these titles are also joined by upcoming seasons of the Sex And The City spin-off And Just Like That… and an It spin-off, Welcome To Derry. The release window for The Last Of Us season two comes after its show runner Craig Mazin revealed in an interview earlier this month (December 1) that production on the anticipated follow-up will begin in February next year. The new season of Euphoria had already been on hold for some time as show creator Sam Levinson worked on The Idol. HBO Head of Drama Francesca Orsi told Deadline in May that Levinson’s work on that plus Zendaya’s packed schedule and the recently concluded actors and writers’ strike would likely push back the premiere to 2025.In July, Euphoria star Angus Cloud died of an accidental drug overdose, which could potentially push back the series’ premiere if his character is being written out.In November, The White Lotus creator Mike White revealed that he hopes to begin work on its third season early next year, teasing it will be “bigger” in scope.“It’s going to be supersized White Lotus,” he added.
