When it comes to losing weight, it can be just as difficult to know what to do as it is to actually get the weight off.
People hoping to slim down have the huge task of sifting through tonnes of diets and expert advice, which, more confusingly, oftentimes contradicts itself. Not knowing where to start, the simplest step would be to ask your GP.
Indeed, a review published in the BMJ last year set out to examine different GP-led weight loss programmes, finding that people who slimmed down with the help of their GP kept around 80% of it off when followed up two years later.
The study found that two programmes that had the greatest weight loss in a year used what's called a total diet replacement plan that replacing food with products like shakes.
Two of the study's co-authors — Claire Madigan, a senior research associate of Loughborough University, and Liz Sturgiss, a senior research fellow of Monash University — have written the following explanation in their own words.
For people looking to lose weight, it can be hard to know where to start.
Not only are there scores of commercial weight loss programmes to choose from, there's also plenty of confusing and contradictory advice to be found online or in magazines.
But the best person to help you lose weight may actually be your family doctor, as our recent review showed.
We found that weight loss programmes delivered by general practitioners (GPs) and their teams can help people lose weight and reduce their waist size.
We also found that people were able to maintain their weight loss even after two years.
To conduct our review, we looked at 27 studies with data from 8,000 people. There was a lot of variation in the weight loss programmes offered by GPs.

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large Ken Marino credits his pal Adam Scott for making the unlikely and unexpected “Party Down” revival a reality. “Adam helped guide this and make this happen in a real way,” he tells Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast. “I think everybody in that cast recognized how special it was, and to just kind of go back and to get to do some more, to be with these people again, creatively, it’s a real gift.” The first two seasons of “Party Down” aired on Starz in 2009 and 2010; the revival takes place a decade after the show’s last episode and features the returns of Marino as Ron, the slightly clueless catering manager who now owns the business — well, running it out of his van — and Scott as Henry, the sardonic failed actor who’s now a teacher and working on the side with Party Down to help pay for his alimony.

EXCLUSIVE: “I’ve always boiled it down to there’s something very simplistic to Mason,” Perry Mason star Matthew Rhys admits about the iconic and haunted lawyer he portrays on the HBO prequel series. “It’s not necessarily his sense of justice but sense of right and wrong,” the Emmy winner adds. “What is right and wrong, and how he goes about righting that, righting that wrong, is, at times, very questionable. But fundamentally, his sense of pure form justice is so strong that everything else becomes very difficult, and the playing of that was just magic.”
