Killers and other criminals will now be forced to attend their sentencing hearings under new plans set out in the King's speech.
Historically, courts have been unable to force even the most evil criminals to attend their sentencings and look justice in the eye. But new plans set out by King Charles today (November 7) as part of the Criminal Justice Bill could see killers compelled to be present for their hearings.
It comes after a number of high profile killers, including Thomas Cashman, who murdered 9-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel, and neonatal nurse serial killer Lucy Letby, refused to attend their sentencing hearings this year. But concerns have been raised that the new rules could cause 'more anguish' for families of victims.

Bryn Hughes, the father of murdered police officer Nicola Hughes, has previously branded calls for the law to change as a 'knee-jerk reaction,' urging ministers to consider the practicalities of forcing criminals into the dock.
