The Hardrock, in Stretford, played host to the likes of David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Tina Turner, Roxy Music, Slade, and Chuck Berry during the 1970s. Originally a bowling alley, it later became a B&Q store, which closed down in 2016.
Since then, it lay dormant — but demolition teams moved in this week (November 16) to clear the site. Although demolition has been approved by Trafford Council, there are no plans to construct anything on the site.

That’s because the last planning bid, to build 332 apartments on the site behind Lancashire Cricket Club, was rejected at an appeal because it ‘would not deliver a high-quality, well-designed building and place’, inspectors found. They said ‘substantial harm would be caused to local character and appearance and there would be consequential effects for existing and future occupants’ living conditions in terms of the amenity spaces and overbearing outlook owing to the design’.
However, a new demolition-only planning bid was given the green light at the end of October, a spokesperson for the council confirmed to the Manchester Evening News, who added: “There have not been any further applications for redevelopment of the site so at the moment the demolition is authorised but any new buildings on the site would not be.”
It means that a decades’-long history of cinema, music venue, club, and hardware store has come to an end. One of those who saw The Hardrock in its heyday was Tom Hayes, 73.
