Everything Everywhere All at Once not just as a film title, but as a voting instruction. “Everything Everywhere” took the top award at Saturday night’s Producers Guild Awards and then won in every category it could at Sunday’s SAG Awards, setting a new record for the most SAG wins in a single night by one film. And an Oscar race that looked up in the air two days ago now has a seriously strong frontrunner.
The indie movie that was supposed to be too divisive to win is now on such a roll that it’s hard to imagine it not winning at the Dolby Theater in two weeks.Nothing is set in stone, but Sunday’s SAG Awards made the Best Picture race much clearer, gave Yeoh her first head-to-head victory over Cate Blanchett and dropped Curtis with a big bang into a supporting-actress race that was supposed to belong to Angela Bassett. And in news that has nothing to do with “Everything Everywhere,” SAG-AFTRA voters also gave “The Whale” star Brendan Fraser a needed boost at a time when Austin Butler’s performance in “Elvis” seemed to be picking up momentum in the Best Actor race.On Friday, I wrote a story outlining the things that all the major Best Picture contenders needed to do this weekend to take momentum into the start of Oscar voting on Thursday. For “Everything Everywhere,” I gave this as the best-case scenario:It wins Producers Guild on Saturday and SAG ensemble on Sunday to give it a formidable trifecta with the Directors Guild Award it already won. And if it wants to rub it in, supporting-actor lock Ke Huy Quan is joined in the SAG winners’ circle when Michelle Yeoh scores an upset over Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis does the same over Angela Bassett or Kerry Condon.I didn’t expect it to check off everything on that list,

2023 Oscars on Sunday. Will Smith didn’t return to violently clobber Chris Rock. He couldn’t.
It’s going to be an emotional night for Austin Butler.
Paul Mescal proved it’s not just Hollywood ladies who can have fun with fashion at the Oscars as he arrived at Sunday’s event in a white suit. The Normal People actor, 27, is up for Best Actor for his role in coming-of-age drama Aftersun. He’s up against Colin Farrell, nominated for The Banshees Of Inisherin, Elvis’ Austin Butler and The Whale star Brendan Fraser, as well as veteran British actor Bill Nighy for Living. Arriving at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre on Sunday night, Paul cut a suave figure in a white tuxedo jacket with a bowtie as he posed on the champagne carpet.
Considering the breathless ease of “Everything Everywhere All At Once’s” award season so far, it’s sort of remarkable how many categories are up for grabs when the Academy Awards begin on Sunday evening. Oscar’s top prize is pretty much all locked up and should reward A24 with their second Best Picture win in less than 12 years of existence.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” swept all the major guild awards, the first time that grand slam had happened in a decade and only the fifth time in history, the suspense seemed to drain out of the 95th Academy Awards. After all, how suspenseful can it be if everything goes to “Everything?” But it’d be a mistake to think that Sunday’s show won’t be a nail-biter in many ways.

Jenelle Riley Deputy Awards and Features Editor This article first appeared as part of Jenelle Riley’s Acting Up newsletter – to subscribe for early content and weekly updates on all things acting, visit the Acting Up signup page. Sometimes due to article lengths or just time, there are some fun tales from interviews and Q&As that don’t make their way into stories. So I’ve decided to include a round-up here. Enjoy! The Accent in “Tár” Has Surprising Origins If you’re not already aware, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation is a non-profit org that provides several resources and emergency assistance to SAG-AFTRA artists. It also hosts fantastic Q&As that really dive deep into the acting process and for the recent SAG Awards, organizers hosted several panels with contenders in different categories. I was honored to moderate a few, including one for the lead female actor in a film with nominees Ana de Armas (“Blonde”), Cate Blanchett (“Tár”), Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”) and Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once).”
For the first time since2020, just before Covid dealt a devastating blow to the industry, exhibitors and awards season, it feels like this year’s Oscar show may return to some sense of normalcy. And with box office hits mixed with acclaimed indies among the 10 Best Picture nominees, this could be the turning point in the recovery of the Academy Awards. At the nominees’ luncheon, in fact, Steven Spielberg was overheard telling Tom Cruise that he may have saved the movie business with Top Gun: Maverick, 2022’s No. 1 movie and a billion-dollar rescue for the industry. On Maverick’s tail came Avatar: The Way of Water, which became the third biggest global-grossing film of all time. And shock of shocks, both of those long-gestating sequels are Best Picture contenders with 10 nominations between them.
After Bette Midler faced criticism about her appearance, the 77-year-old confessed she got plastic surgery. As the "Hocus Pocus" star received the Distinguished Collaborator Award at the annual Costume Designers Guild Awards, Midler admitted she underwent cosmetic procedures. "Time has a way of smoothing everything out," Midler remarked, according to Page Six. "I've been at it for close to 60 years … and I do look fabulous; I know … I've had some tailoring done on my face." Midler donned a black gown with silver-beaded embellishments for the evening.
Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor “Elvis” and “Everything Everywhere All At Once” were the film winners at the 2023 Costume Designers Guild Awards. Shirley Kurata’s win comes as “Everything Everywhere All At Once” has garnered momentum heading into the final phase of Oscar voting which begins on March 2. Kurata bested titans in the field going up against Deborah L. Scott (“Avatar: The Way of Water”), history-making Ruth E. Carter (“Black Panther) and Mayes C. Rubeo (“Thor: Love and Thunder”). Catherine Martin won for her work on Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” Building over 90 looks alone for Austin Butler, Martin, a triple-nominee for production design and best picture remains a favorite.

2023 SAG Awards on Sunday, but some fan-favorite shows and movies were shut out.The best actor in a film category was a tight race, but ultimately “Elvis” star Austin Butler lost to “The Whale” star Brendan Fraser.Fraser, 54, also scored an award at the Critics Choice Awards in January over Butler. The pair will duke it out again come March at the Oscars. However, the “Carrie Diaries” alum, 31, won the Golden Globe and BAFTA best actor awards earlier this year for his role as the King of Rock and Roll.“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” star Angela Bassett was also snubbed last night, despite earning a Golden Globe and being nominated for a BAFTA.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” could continue its momentum and win in several film categories, including Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role (Ke Huy Quan) and Outstanding Performance by a Cast. The multiverse-hopping indie directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert enters the evening with the wind at its back, having taken home the top prize on Saturday at the Producers Guild Awards, indicating that the zany film is not polarizing voters as much as some feared.
