Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief Thailand’s Nation Group news media conglomerate is investing in a forthcoming feature film “Nak Ruk Mak Makk Mak,” the company said. The film is a romantic comedy inspired by Thai ghost tale “Mae Nak Phra Khanong.” Buoyed by a string of recent successes and a government initiative to bolster national soft power and the creative industries, Thai film is attracting new investors.
Thai authorities plan to set up a promotional and funding agency spanning multiple forms of culture, including film, music, food and Muay Thai boxing. At FilMart last week, Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Barnavadi hosted a lavish Thai Night promotional event.
And the country’s Department of International Trade and Promotion, under the Ministry of Commerce, signed a memorandum of understanding with Hong Kong’s Trade Development Council. “Nak Ruk Mak Makk Mak,” brings together four companies: Nation Group (Thailand) as investor, Black Dragon Entertainment as promoter and distributor and Transformation Film and Bangfire Film Entertainment.
The film will be directed by comedian, Nong Chachacha, who makes his directorial debut.
At a launch ceremony held at a temple on Wednesday it was announced that the film will star Mum Jokmok, Krist-Perawat Sangpotirat, Yada Narilya Gulmongkolpech, Nui Chernyim and Rusameekae Fahkueanlonalong.

This year’s Filmart was definitely bigger and busier than last year, which was the first physical edition following the reopening of Hong Kong and mainland China’s borders after the pandemic. According to Filmart organizers, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), more than 750 exhibitors and 7,500 visitors attended this year’s Filmart, compared to around 700 exhibitors and 7,300 visitors in 2023. Naman Ramachandran Dubai-based sales agency Cercamon has acquired worldwide rights for Indonesian film “Crocodile Tears,” it was revealed at Hong Kong rights market FilMart. The protagonist is a man who spent 20 years in jail after being falsely accused of rape. After his release, he intends to confront the woman, but instead falls for her again — to the point that she is able to manipulate him into kidnapping the child for which she is the nanny.

Long a destination for Hollywood, China and India productions, and currently playing host to the lensing of Season 3 of “The White Lotus,” Thailand has many of the elements that could contribute to building a major film industry. These include diverse locations, skilled crews, studio facilities and a location production, or incentive, scheme.
