Ted Sarandos Downplays ‘Knives Out 2′ Theatrical Deal – Netflix Is About “Entertaining Members With Netflix Movies On Netflix”

Rodolphe Belmer, the former Canal+ CEO on the verge of heading up French network TF1, has stepped down from the Netflix Board.

“CSI” showrunner and executive producer Carol Mendelsohn and producing partner Julie Weitz have struck a multi-year first-look broadcast direct deal with Fox Entertainment, president of entertainment Michael Thorn announced at MIPCOM Cannes. The duo’s previous deal with Universal Television is now over.Under the terms, Mendelsohn and Weitz will develop scripted dramas for the Fox.

EXCLUSIVE: In an unprecedented move, Netflix and major exhibition circuits in the U.S. and UK recently agreed a 30-day theatrical window for Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. This comes after years of discussions on finding “a way forward to show their high-quality productions on our screens,” says Tim Richards, founder and CEO of Vue International which will be showing the anticipated sequel in its theaters in the UK, Germany and Italy.

Sarandos on Tuesday was asked about the unique theatrical strategy for the “Knives Out” sequel, which will open in a sneak preview for one week over the Thanksgiving holiday a month before it debuts on Netflix. While the film will play at AMC and Regal locations, a first for any Netflix movie, it will only play on 600 screens.

Jennifer Maas TV Business Writer Following a quarter that saw Netflix release several of its most popular titles of all time — per the streamer’s self-reported internal measurements — and subscriber growth after two straight quarters of losses, co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos is feeling “better and better” about the company’s $17 billion content spend budget. “Both the scope and scale, as well as the range and cadence of hits is improving,” Sarandos said during Netflix’s prerecorded Q3 earnings interview with his fellow execs, which was released Tuesday afternoon following the announcement of the third-quarter results. “So I feel better and better about that $17 billion of content spend because what we have to do is be better and better at getting more impact per billion dollar spent than anyone else. And that’s how we’re focusing on it. So I think we’re spending at about the right level. And as we re-accelerate revenue, we’ll revisit that number, of course. But we’re a pretty disciplined bunch about that.”

Netflix is spending around $17B on content this year and next but has hinted that it may boost this after a strong quarter.

“Glass Onion,” is set for a Netflix release next month and Johnson confirmed at a BFI London Film Festival press conference that Blanc is queer.Johnson was asked about a particular scene in the upcoming movie that seemingly showed Blanc having a male lover.“Yes, obviously he is,” the “Looper” filmmaker bluntly told reporters.“There’s nobody in the world I can imagine in bringing me more joy for Benoit Blanc to be with,” he added.Craig, 54, then interjected, saying: “No spoilers [but] who wouldn’t want to live with that person?”The stand-alone sequel will have a one-week limited theatrical release on Nov. 23 before moving to Netflix on Dec.

Netflix may not be in the live sports business but it certainly wants viewers to know that it’s got some content around the edges.
