Scientists have issued a warning over "super gonorrhoea" with cases of the potentially fatal sexually transmitted infection on the rise across the UK.
The experts suggest that the disease could be a fatal, with the World Health Organization closely monitoring Neisseria gonorrhoea, also known as super gonorrhoea. The WHO are now considering the STI a "priority microorganism", as they keep an eye on the "super gonorrhoea" for signs of drug-resistance.
Sexually transmitted disease can spread rapidly through a population via people participating in unprotected sex. Fortunately, most can be treated with a course of antibiotics.
However, Neisseria gonorrhoea, or N. gonorrhoea, is causing concern due to its resistance to drugs, reports the Daily Star.
Leading STI expert at the WHO, Dr Dr Teodora, has warned that the disease could be deadly, saying: "When untreated, certain STIs can lead to long-term irreversible outcomes and some can be potentially fatal."
Treatments currently being used to treat super gonorrhoea are proving less and less effective, with the strain spreading to countries around the globe, including the UK, as well as cases detected in Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, France and Ireland, the World Health Organization has warned.
A study “suggests high rates of resistance in gonorrhoea to current treatment options” the international body warned.
Around 82 million new cases of the dangerous STI are reported every year in people aged between 15 and 49 years-old around the world, the WHO say, explaining that “Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in N. gonorrhoea is particularly problematic".
With a high resistance to the recommended treatment - ceftriaxone and azithromycin - as well as a resistance to penicillin,

Plos One medical journal — gay and bisexual men over 70 were more likely than their straight peers of the same age to have had more than one sexual partner recently. Those men were likely to continue having sex with multiple partners, while straight men and women became less sexually active.Women who have sex with women, and other relationship types, were discounted due to small sample sizes. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of East Anglia, King’s College London, and University College London surveyed more than 5,000 adults during the 2022 mpox outbreak, looking at how sexual activity changes with age, in order to develop scientific models for sexually transmitted infections, reports Sky News.
