Brian Cox submitted for lead actor Emmy despite limited ‘Succession’ screen time

Succession has been submitted into the leading actor category at this year’s Emmys, despite his character’s limited screen time in season four.Variety has confirmed that Cox’s turn as the billionaire media mogul will be considered alongside fellow co-stars Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin, the latter having moved into the lead category after previously being listed as a supporting actor. The announcement comes in spite of the fact that Cox’s character died in the third episode (‘Connor’s Wedding’) of the current and final season. Subsequently, it had been speculated that the actor would be downgraded to the supporting actor or guest categories. With that not being the case, Succession could now make history as the first show to land three lead drama actor nominations in the same year.

Succession will officially to an end with its fourth season.Created by Jesse Armstrong (Peep Show), the satirical comedy-drama about the power struggle within the Roy family has been a critical success since its inception in 2018 — picking up 13 Emmys across its lifespan so far.The show’s cast include Brian Cox as the family patriarch Logan Roy, alongside Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, Matthew Macfadyen, Nicholas Braun and Alan Ruck.Armstrong confirmed that Succession’s fourth season would also be its last in February 2023 ahead of the show’s return in March. The final episode airs on Sunday May 28 on HBO at 9pm EST in the US. In the UK, the episode will premiere simultaneously on Monday May 29 at 2am on Sky Atlantic. The episode will be available on HBO Max and NOW afterwards.Succession’s finale is titled With Open Eyes (via GQ) which, like every other season finale of the series, is taken from the poem Dream Song 29 by John Berryman, published in 1964.According to Entertainment Weekly, it will be a feature-length episode at “around 90 minutes”.Speaking to the outlet, Strong, who plays Kendall Roy, compared shooting the finale to skiing down a double black diamond slope.“Certainly, there’s an awareness on the periphery that this is it, but in a way there’s no room for that,” Strong said.

Brian Cox Submits for Lead Actor Drama for ‘Succession’ Despite Limited Screen Time (EXCLUSIVE)

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor Happy Emmy season, “you clock-watching fucks” — Logan Roy is still leading the way. Brian Cox has submitted his performance as Logan Roy, the recently departed Waystar Royco CEO on HBO’s “Succession,” into the lead actor (drama) category. Cox’s team exclusively confirmed to Variety that the actor’s iconic turn as the bold father and media mogul will be considered alongside his two co-stars, Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin, who opted to switch into the category for the show’s fourth and final season. Cox’s character died in the third episode of this season, “Connor’s Wedding,” which left many pundits speculating the Scottish actor, who received two previous noms in the lead drama actor field, would downgrade to either the supporting actor or guest categories. That won’t be the case, which puts the drama series uniquely positioned to make history in several ways.

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor As the Writers Guild of America goes on strike, late-night television has been put on pause, including NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” which is on an indefinite hiatus. Multiple sources confirm to Variety that, in the unlikely event the strike is resolved in the coming weeks, “Succession” star Kieran Culkin is scheduled to take the stage at Studio 8H on May 13, with musical guest Labrinth, while “The White Lotus” star Jennifer Coolidge is set to close out “SNL’s” 48th season with Foo Fighters. This would have been Culkin’s second time hosting following his season 47 appearance. After being brilliantly imitated by “SNL” cast member Chloe Fineman, Coolidge would have made her long-awaited debut on the show.

Kieran Culkin on Why Roman’s Wife and Kid Disappeared From ‘Succession’: ‘They Were Toying With Roman’s Sexuality’

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor SPOILER ALERT: This interview discusses gargantuan plot developments in “Kill List,” Season 4, Episode 5 of “Succession,” now streaming on HBO Max. Kieran Culkin hasn’t yet watched this week’s episode of “Succession” because he’s traveling — and doesn’t like watching things on his laptop. Having wrapped filming only six weeks ago, and with upcoming episodes still in post-production, Culkin isn’t even sure how the gripping story of this family dynasty will end. The April 23 episode “Kill List” was written by Jon Brown and Ted Cohen and directed by Emmy winner Andrij Parekh (for Season 2, Episode 3, “Hunting,” aka the “boar on the floor” episode), showcased one of Roman’s most emotionally driven scenes throughout the four seasons of “Succession.” In its tension-filled 60 minutes, Culkin demonstrated his abilities as a dramatic actor during a heated exchange with streaming media giant CEO Lukas Matsson (played exquisitely by Alexander Skarsgård). In the scene on the Norwegian mountaintops, Matsson insults Roman and Kendall (Jeremy Strong), the newly minted co-CEOs of Waystar Royco, as they try to “Scooby Doo” their way out of the GoJo deal the board desperately covets.

Emmys: Kieran Culkin Moves to Lead Actor Drama Category for ‘Succession’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor Roman Roy is now co-CEO of Waystar RoyCo on HBO’s “Succession,” so it’s only natural that actor Kieran Culkin followed suit with his Emmy campaign. Culkin, who plays the sarcastic and jokey Roman on HBO’s hit drama series, confirms to Variety exclusively he will be submitted for the lead drama actor category at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards. This marks a category switch for the actor, who previously submitted in the supporting categories for the three previous seasons.
