“Succession,” Logan Roy may be dead and Waystar RoyCo may have been sold off to a Nordic streaming company. But in the real world, or at least the world according to Emmy voters, the Roy family still wields immense power. And while the AFC Richmond soccer team (sorry, football team) coached by Ted Lasso on the comedy series named after him may have fallen short in its quest to finish in first place, the show itself remains the champion of its league, aka the Emmy comedy categories.
In nominations that were announced on Wednesday morning, the reigning drama and comedy series winners topped their respective categories, with “Succession” landing a personal-best 27 nominations to lead all drama series and “Ted Lasso” picking up 21 to handily beat all comedies. Their dominance was not unexpected, but it was impressive nonetheless – and even with new rules at least partially designed to curb the kind of category-hogging we’ve seen in recent years, both shows managed to put multiple nominees in the same category: three lead actor, four supporting actor, two guest actor and three guest actress nominations for “Succession” and two supporting actor, two supporting actress and three guest actress noms for “Ted Lasso.”In fact, we should probably acknowledge that the new rules that prohibit voters from casting ballots for an unlimited number of acting nominees (a presumed advantage for widely-watched shows with big casts) didn’t really do much in the face of juggernauts like “Succession,” which tied its Emmy-record 14 nominations, and “The White Lotus,” which dominated the supporting drama categories with four actor and five actress nominees.Even under a new system that limits voters to a number of choices equal to the number of

Neil Blomkamp first made his big splash in Hollywood with 2009’s “District 9.” But his other sci-fi follows-ups, 2013’s “Elysium” and 2015’s “Chappie,” didn’t fare as well with either critics or audiences. Now, after a brief (and underwhelming) pitstop into horror with 2021’s “Demonic,” Blomkamp tries another genre on for size with the summer blockbuster in the coming-of-age racing movie “Gran Turismo.” READ MORE: Summer 2023 Movie Preview: 52 Must-See Films To Watch Based on the hit PlayStation videogame series, “Gran Turismo” takes on the story of Jann Mardenborough, a player so good at the racing simulation game he ended behind the wheel of a real race car — and did well there, too.

called a strike, a hot topic of conversation was the assertion by an unnamed studio executive that the studios’ endgame in the WGA strike was to “break the WGA” and allow the strike to go on until people lost their homes. Ron Perlman came out swinging on Friday in direct response, and comedian, SAG-AFTRA member and WGA contract negotiating committee member Adam Conover slammed those comments himself on CNN Saturday, saying the striking writers and actors are going to be the ones starving the studios out.“I mean first of all, it’s offensive that the CEOs that we’re negotiating against literally said to the press that their goal is to starve us out until we lose our apartments and homes,” Conover told CNN’s Jim Acosta, referring to the unnamed executive’s comments in Deadline last week.

Sheeran was nominated (along with co-writers Max Martin and Foy Vance) for the song “A Beautiful Game” for the season 3 finale of “Ted Lasso,” one of two songs from the popular Apple TV+ series that made it into the music-and-lyrics category. Emmy’s 550-member music peer group ignored the original songs entered by Dolly Parton, David Byrne, Steve Martin, Kid Cudi, Donald Glover and Lainey Wilson, as well as those from such Oscar-winning tunesmiths as Alan Menken, Steven Schwartz, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Alison Herman TV Critic For a few years in the 2010s, TV was seen as a refuge from the intellectual property boom engulfing blockbuster filmmaking. Original, mid-budget stories aimed at adults were no longer welcome at the multiplex, but they could often find a home in a prestige-hungry medium newly attractive to A-list talent. Beginning with the launch of the streaming service Disney+ in 2019, however, “cinematic” universes like Star Wars and Marvel established a presence on the small screen, while the conclusion of “Game of Thrones” that same year kicked off the arms race for the next crossover genre hit. The Primetime Emmy Awards have acknowledged this trend in the past. “WandaVision,” “The Mandalorian,” and “The Boys” all earned series nominations in prior years, affording artistic legitimacy to these franchises in addition to their popular success. (The first two series were the small screen debuts of Marvel and Star Wars, respectively; “The Boys” is a superhero satire that is itself adapted from a comic book, with a budget and fandom to match that of its targets.) But for its 75th annual honors, the Television Academy fully embraced the IP extravaganza that’s enveloped the rest of culture. TV is no longer a refuge from the prevailing winds, but a channel for them.
