Steven Soderbergh’s Max Limited Series ‘Full Circle’ Headlines 2023 Tribeca Festival’s TV Lineup

Tom Holland, Amanda Seyfried and Emmy Rossum are coming together in, the gripping, new limited series from Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman (). Ahead of its debut, Apple TV+ shared the official trailer following a first-look reveal at the star-studded cast and premiere date announcement for the 10-part season in April.In the upcoming thriller created by Goldsman, Holland, who also serves as an executive producer, plays a man named Danny Sullivan, who is arrested following his involvement in a 1979 shooting in New York City. Told through a series of interviews conducted by a curious interrogator, Rya Goodwin (Seyfried), the story of Danny's life unfolds, revealing how elements of his past shaped his future, including the twists and turns that led him to a life-altering incident. Rossum, meanwhile, plays Danny's mother, Candy, while the rest of the cast is rounded out by Sasha Lane, Will Chase and Lior Raz as well as guest stars Jason Isaacs, Christopher Abbott, Thomas Sadoski and Zachary Golinger.In the trailer, released Wednesday, Holland's Danny opens by reflecting on a traumatic night from his past that he says «marked me.» «Everything that came afterwards couldn't be a coincidence, could it?» he questions.When Danny meets Rya in a sparse room, she comments that he «doesn't seem like a dangerous person.» But there's always more to what meets the eye as it flashes back to the moment a burly man suddenly shows up and saves Danny from trouble, taking him in as one of his own.As Rya tries to get to the bottom of a shooting that Danny is involved in and a prime suspect, details of whatever transpired start to come out and suspicion grows around him.

Emmys love in the Limited Series category, but that doesn’t mean the show won’t see a second season. A source close to the production told TheWrap that creators Damon Lindelof and Tara Hernandez always intended for Season 1 of the genre-bending series to have a “conclusive and satisfying ending” with the finale episode airing Thursday, May 18. The Max drama is the second series in less than a year to take on the same story: the case of Candy Montgomery, a Texas housewife who killed her friend and neighbor Betty Gore with an ax in 1980. This version follows closely on the heels of “Candy,” which aired on Hulu last year. The proximity practically demands comparison, and it’s tempting to draw up a laundry list of differences and call it a review. “Love & Death” casts Elizabeth Olsen as Montgomery, while “Candy” stars Jessica Biel. (The more jarring contrast is between the former’s Jesse Plemons and the latter’s Pablo Schreiber, two physically opposite actors who both assume the role of Allan Gore, Betty’s husband and Candy’s ex-lover.) “Candy” is inflected with horror, while “Love & Death” is more naturalist. “Candy” flashes back from the day of the murder, which saw Montgomery toggle from brutal homicide to eerily banal errands, while “Love & Death” is more linear in structure. The effect is not unlike that of 2019’s competing documentaries about the viral quagmire known as Fyre Festival, with the same details refracted through distinct sensibilities. But instead of racing to cover a recent event, these shows converge on a tragedy more than four decades old.

The 2023 Tribeca Festival has announced its lineup of world premieres of new and returning television, including the world premieres of Steven Soderbergh’s Max series Full Circle about a botched kidnapping that reveals long-held secrets in present-day New York City, Prime Video’s Sweeney Todd-inspired The Horror of Dolores Roach and BET+’s Diarra From Detroit, a dark comedy executive produced by Kenya Barris that centers on a divorcing school teacher.

Earlier this week, the Tribeca Festival announced its film lineup for its nine-day event in June. Now it’s time to learn about the fest’s TV world premieres.

So what does the ever-prolific Steven Soderbergh have up next? He has the series “Full Circle” on deck as part of his overall deal with Max, and “The Pendulum Project,” which he also shot last year. However, after those shows, Soderbergh’s next project is wide open.

Now Park returns to TV for the first time since 2018’s “The Little Drummer Girl” with “The Sympathizer,” set for an exclusive release on Max in 2024.

HBO has released the official teaser trailer and a new photo for the original limited series The Sympathizer, which will premiere in 2024. They provide a glimpse at the four characters played by Robert Downey Jr. who executive produces the series alongside co-showrunners Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar. The footage, which introduces the cast led by Hoa Xuande, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Ky Duyen, and Sandra Oh, was shown today during Warner Bros. Discovery’s unveiling of the Max streaming service.
