EXCLUSIVE: In a continuation of a recent signing hot streak, Independent Artist Group has brought in Sonequa Martin-Green, the star of Star Trek: Discovery, who has made history in recent years as the first Black woman to topline a project in the Gene Roddenberry franchise, as well as its first Black female Starfleet Captain.
The Emmy-winning series, set 10 years before Kirk, Spock, and the Enterprise, stars Martin-Green as Michael Burnham, who comes to the USS Discovery as its science specialist, after being imprisoned for a mutiny above the USS Shenzhou. The thesp is also a producer on the show created for Paramount+ (then CBS All Access) by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, which is expected to return for its fifth and final season next year.
Prior to Star Trek: Discovery, which shot her to a new level of stardom and made her one of the most in-demand actresses on television, Martin-Green was well known for her turn as zombie outbreak survivor Sasha Williams in Seasons 3 to 9 of AMC mega-hit The Walking Dead. She’s also been seen in memorable roles on Fox’s New Girl, ABC’s Once Upon a Time and CBS’ The Good Wife, as well as in films like Space Jam: A New Legacy and the indie The Outside Story with Brian Tyree Henry.
Originating the role of Sonji Clay, Muhammad Ali’s first wife, in the play Fetch Clay, Make Man, the actress has additionally been seen Off-Broadway in Outside People.
Martin-Green most recently wrapped production on My Dead Friend Zoe, a dark indie dramedy in which she stars opposite Ed Harris and Natalie Morales. The film from Kyle Hausmann-Stokes, which she also executive produced, watches as a female veteran finds herself in a mysterious and complicated relationship with a wise-cracking (and dead)
