Spain's goalscorer in the World Cup final against England was told her father had died just after her team's victory.
Olga Carmona's first-half goal in the final in Sydney secured Spain's 1-0 win against the Lionesses. But it was later confirmed by the Royal Spanish Football Federation that Carmona had been told the heartbreaking news that her father had died after the match, the Mirror reports.
A statement from the RFEF on Sunday evening read: "The RFEF deeply regrets to report the death of Olga Carmona's father. The soccer player learned the sad news after the World Cup final.

"We send our most sincere hugs to Olga and her family in a moment of deep pain. We love you, Olga, you are the history of Spanish football."
Reacting to the news a couple of hours later, Carmona paid tribute to her father on social media. She posted: "And without knowing it, I had my Star before the game started.
"I know that you have given me the strength to achieve something unique. I know that you have been watching me tonight and that you are proud of me. Rest in peace dad".
Carmona’s had written her name into Spanish folklore with her strike against England just before learning of the devastating news. The Lionesses battled back in a bid to find an equaliser but were unable to breach their opponents.
A superb penalty save from Mary Earps gave England fans something to cheer about midway through the second half, but the Lionesses were unable to capitalise. Spain lifted the World Cup for the first time in their history.
