A ‘sophisticated’ thief who stole more than £30,000 of perfume for Manchester Airport’s duty free has been jailed for 18 months.
Marcel Sandu, 32, carried out four raids on the World Duty Free store in summer 2022 and July 2023. He was only snagged when a customs officer in Jersey noticed he was carrying 79 bottles of perfume in a hold-all.
He then challenged Sandu who assured the officer ‘he was given the perfume by another man having never been in trouble with the police before’. However — one flaw in his story was that officers then found a prohibition order in the same bag, banning Sandu from Glasgow Airport.

After this exchange in the Channel Islands on July 12 of this year, Sandu, of Newham Way in London, returned to mainland Britain on the same day and was promptly arrested when he landed at Luton Airport. That raid he carried alone which saw him take 79 perfume bottles worth £9,018 from Manchester Airport followed a similar modus operandi Sandu and another man called Tascu devised in 2022.
On those occasions, prosecutor Hannah Forsyth told Manchester Crown Court, the pair would enter the airport under false identities in the early hours.
“At 3:41am on May 31, 2022, the defendant ended up in one of the duty free stores and began to move high-value perfumes from their designated units to the 40 percent discount shelves,” she told courtroom two. “Once on that shelf they were moved into the bag [of the defendant] in stages. They left at 4:11am, but at 4:24am they then changed clothes and removed the remaining perfumes in to his bag.”
That heist was the first to take place, and saw 84 bottles of Chanel and Dior fragrances

Guy Lodge Film Critic Unorthodox family structures yield correspondingly unpredictable drama in “Housekeeping for Beginners,” a vital, febrile multi-character study that further confirms writer-director Goran Stolevski as a talent to be reckoned with. Departing radically from the poise of his folk-horror debut “You Won’t Be Alone” and the gentle intimacy of its swift follow-up “Of an Age,” this study of domestic, romantic and generational conflicts in a crowded queer household instead embraces a spirit of antic chaos, both in subject matter and jagged, hit-the-ground-running execution.
