The SNP is expected to go into the next general election arguing that winning a “majority” of seats would be a mandate for independence.
It is understood Humza Yousaf will back a plan at his party’s conference which would set the bar at 29 seats.
The party’s independence strategy has been mired in confusion after judges ruled Holyrood could not organise indyref2 without Westminster’s consent.
Previous SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon said a majority of votes for pro-independence parties at the general election would be enough, but the plan was widely unpopular internally.
In a joint motion for this weekend’s conference in Aberdeen, Yousaf and SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn said winning “most” seats would result in independence negotiations with Westminster.
However, a senior SNP source told the Record the leadership is amenable to changing “most” to “majority” of seats.
The insider said there is confidence an amended motion will be passed.
Tory MSP Donald Cameron said:“The SNP shouldn’t be wasting time on this obsession at all. The Scottish people decisively rejected their separatist agenda and have made it clear they don’t want to revisit it. They want a government that will tackle their real priorities, which is why they are deserting the SNP in droves.”
The SNP has been approached.
