The previous installment, released during the pandemic in 2021, which was directed by Jason Reitman and produced by the late Ghostbusters filmmaker Ivan Reitman, opened to $44M and legged out to $129M domestic. Currently through four movies the Ghostbusters franchise stands at $945.2M; the fifth title will easily put the brand past the $1 billion mark if not this weekend, shortly thereafter.

Not a great start of the year for Sony, who has two other spinoffs in its “Spider-verse” hitting theaters this year: “Kraven The Hunter” on August 30 and the newly titled “Venom: The Last Dance” on October 25.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the actor was unfazed when asked about “Madame Web” being widely mocked.

Yet despite its promising setup within the shadowy confines of an Italian nunnery and a cast led by Sydney Sweeney, Álvaro Morte, Benedetta Porcaroli and Simona Tabasco, the film struggles to carve out a niche for itself. Directed by Michael Mohan and written by Andrew Lobel, the movie treads familiar ground, recycling familiar elements without delivering the novel twists, deeper insights or genuine horror in a genre that thrives on the exploration of faith’s darker dimensions.
