While it's no secret Shaughna Phillips is all about body confidence and embracing "what you've got", the road to accepting her image hasn't been a simple one. Not only has she confessed to suffering from body dysmorphia during her time on the hit ITV dating programme Love Island back in 2020, but the reality star has also revealed she has been on a diet since she was a teenager, until recently.
"Starting from the age of 14 or so, I don't think I've ever been off a diet," the 28 year old told New! Teen magazines have had a huge amount to do with her mindset around losing weight from a young age as she recalled how they had "holiday diet tips" that included absurd advice like eating a handful of almonds during the day to "keep you going until dinner". "I think from a very young age I was taught that food is the enemy," she continued.
28 grams of almonds (approximately 23 nuts), according to healthline, is just 161 calories – which is a shocking contrast to the NHS daily recommended caloric intake of 2,342 per day for a 14 year old. And Shaughna isn't the only person who sought to lose weight at a young age as research published by JAMA Pediatrics in 2020 found that in 2015, 42 per cent of 14 year old girls and boys said they currently were trying to lose weight, compared to 30 per cent 10 years prior.
